how much savings are you allowed before it affects child tax credits?

there is no link, you have to account for any income on the savings in your total income, but there is no upper limit on how much savings you can have.

Savings are not used in the calculation. If you run your details through this Online Benefits Calculator you can see which elements are included.

Savings don't affect tax credits although I suppose if you had a massive amount (you are "allowed" additional income of up to £300 a year of interest I think which would suggest quite a sizeable amount if savings).

When universal credit comes it will change and if you have savings of over £16,000 you won't get anything, like housing benefit is now.

Got my savings interest income a bit wrong there for tax credits - you can have up to £300 interest income with no penalty - above that it would decrease the amount you get but not prevent you getting tax credits.
