Bank charges

Checked my balance this morning to find that some money has been paid into my account early only for my bank to deduct £60 charge for unauthorised overdraft. I've looked back over my statement for last month and have only been overdrawn by £6.80.

What's the question?

With you last statement there will be a list detail exactly what the charges are for.

Overdrawn is overdrawn and so it doesn't matter how much., it will all be a set fee.

You went overdrawn, it was unauthorised.

NiceViper · 21/01/2012 09:13

If you are rarely overdrawn, then it might be worth asking in branch if the charge can be waived as a good will gesture. I've heard (but do not know for sure) that some Banks will do this if you've had the account for a couple of years and it's the first time you've done this.

Yeah that's happened to me. Annoying isn't it. I agree with Nice, the bank might refund if you don't go overdrawn often.

If you can get your bank to waive this fee as a one-off it might be worth setting up an authorised overdraft facility on your account for a couple of hundred. That way if you accidentally go a pound or two overdrawn in the future it'll cost you far less.

I think you can try to claim these kinds of fees back as banks are not technically allowed to charge you more than it costs them reasonably - they all use it as a way of trying to screw money out of people.

£60 does seem excessive. My bank charges £1/day for authorised borrowing and £5/day for unauthorised. How long was it between going overdrawn and getting back in credit?
