Gift Aid/tax return question

YouCanDoTheCube · 18/01/2012 09:46

If you give regular sums to charity, and tick the Gift Aid box when setting up the direct debit or whatever, can you then also claim those donations as non-taxable income on your tax return, or are you supposed to treat them as normal income because the charity has already reclaimed the tax? Confused

Be grateful for any advice before I tangle with the HMRC helpline

Relevant info I think

Telling HMRC about your Gift Aid donations

It?s important to keep a record of the total amount of your Gift Aid donations for each tax year.

You?ll need to let HMRC know about your Gift Aid donations if:
? you claim age-related Personal Allowance, Married Couple?s Allowance or tax credits
? you pay higher rate tax
? you want to carry back a Gift Aid donation

If you normally complete a tax return you can tell HMRC about your Gift Aid donations by completing the section on Gift Aid payments.

If you don?t complete a return, you can give the details on form P810 Tax Review - available from your Tax Office, or telephone your Tax Office and ask them to make a change to your tax code.

You should put the information on there, but it won't impact the numbers unless you're a higher rate taxpayer (in which case you'll effectively get a credit for the higher rate tax suffered on those conts), or alternatively if you don't actually pay tax for the year (in which case you'll owe money to HMRC in respect of the tax the charity has claimed from HMRC because you ticked the box saying you do pay tax!)
