Will several late payments over the last few years stop us getting a mortgage?

We're planning on trying to buy a house at the end of the year. We only need a 5% deposit and will have about £18000 in savings. We will have loan payments of around £600 but after everything each month will have around £1200 to pay a mortgage.

However I had a quick look at my credit report and there are a few late payments, three last year and five the year before. I know none of these are more than a couple of days missed but that doesn't make any difference does it, a late payment is still a late payment.

For what it's worth we haven't missed any loan payments but I don't think this has any bearing either does it? Also, DH is the main earner and has no late payments?

Are we mad to think anyone will touch us with a bargepole?

Thanks for any advice, we are booked to see a mortgage adviser but just wondered if anyone had any recent experience of mortgages?

Oh really? Is that recently though? It just seems that everywhere I look they say that the banks have recently got much much tougher on bad credit.

It depends on the bank, did you get the full report with your credit score on or just the free one? The full one will give you a better indication. It doesn't matter who is main earner, if you are both on it you will both have to pass credit checks. Potentially you will have more luck with a higher deposit, as the lower your deposit the higher the bank's risk IYKWIM. Is everything else correct on your credit file, eg electoral role, all payments currently up to date, not made any (ideally!) or a lot of recent credit applications? These are all things that can also make a difference to wether you are accepted or not.
