HMRC- do I owe them or do they owe me?

Sorry I'm probably being a bit thick but before Xmas I had a letter about an overpayment. The letter says I have a repayment due but is that they're sending me money or I owe them? The letter also says that a payable order for the amount has been issued separately but again is that a cheque or a form for me to pay them?

If you have overpaid tax, they owe you money. A 'payable order' is HMRC's equivalent of a cheque.

They are sending you money. You paid too much tax. The payable order is the order from them to release the money to you.

If you are worried you can still ring the number on the letter and they will explain it. I deal with HMRC a lot and they do have a tendency to send frightening looking letters full of jargon.

Oh excellent thank you. I was a bit worried that I'd have to come up with money to pay them.
