Child's building society accounts? Not CTF

I'd like to open a savings account for ds - would have gone for Post Office savings but now there's no sub-post-office near us i don't want to stand in a queue to pay in his pocket money each week.

Any recommendations on building society child accounts, or good websites for recommendations?

halifax has a 10% account for children at the moment, it's good for 1 year. You have to have a regular amount going in each month by direct debit, and have to set up a regular children's saver account at the same time. If you can set up a regular direct debit, you won't beat 10% on the highstreet

Don't know where you are based but Chelsea Building Society have Ready Steady Save account at 4.85% variable. They mainly have branches in the south - but they are also big on customer service - try and help you open door with pushchair - apologise if you wait in queue for 5 mins and offer you cup of coffee!!

I have to agree Halifax have very good rates. I am on the regular saver one - well DS is (-: It's the second year I have done it. When it runs out in a few months it will automatically start again at the new rate.

Problems include that I think you can only have a max of around £3k in a Halifax childrens account, also the saver part loses a lot of the interest if you access it earlier than the end of the year.

Good thing is that you can up the direct debit the second year and replow the first years money as well as any you can carry on doing the second year.

Alternatively I think the bog standard Halifax childrens account still gives a good rate of interest from what I remember. I can't quote figures as it is nearly a year since I last sorted the accounts and the figures are probably now out of date (-:
