Car insurance - I thought they usually waive extra charges on your first speeding conviction???

DH got 3 points last month Hmm (actually he is very careful usually, to be fair)

Our monthly payments, with aviva, were c£26 for my car & c£33 for his; I've just added his conviction details online & they've increased my premiums annually by £40, which is 15% & his by £45, about 11%. (He does about 25,000 miles in his car & only about 25 miles in mine, but of course they don't know that Grin)

This seems a bit savage to me - am I being naive? Are they taking advantage of the fact that we're already in for the year?

Think that is normal tbh . I queried ours this year as dh's points were over 3 years old so should have expired on the licence but they weight the premiums for 5 years.

I had a similar experience recently with 3 pts added to my licence for speeding. I work in insurance and had never previously come across insurance premiums being raised for 3 pts on a licence (when claims are reported, you ask, 'any convictions' and sometimes they say yes - it gets referred to u/w and they note it, but usually no added premium if it's something like and SP30 and nothing else). I got £185 added to my premium, and was livid! Ended up cancelling the policy and going elsewhere with the conviction and paying less than I was without it.

I think insurance co's are now using any excuse to add cost onto premiums.

oh that's a good point, Liz - my last 3 points were 5 years ago in January - now logically, if I update the policy details then to take them off, our premiums should go down again...

I bet they won't though

thanks, banana - that's what I was assuming. £185 is really savage!

Ours went up by £250 last year. I was fuming. This year they increased it again citing the Market and DH's 3 points. We moved to be insured with the same company as our life insurance and saved

ours didn't go up at all this year - which amazed me - so I stayed put instead of shopping around, which I normally do (normally get cashback too)

they're clawing some back now, the bastards! Hmm
