Separating from husband, want to go back to maiden name

how do I do it. I need to move would like to move in maiden name but have everything in married name. Is it easy. I also will need to be credit checked but haven't used this name is 16 years. I have nothing but an NI card in my old name and soon to be name.

If it were me, rather than risk any problems with credit rating etc, I'd move house using my married name and then change everything once the move had gone through. You'll have to give everyone your new address and you could advise of your new name at the same time.

my credit is shot anyway!

Oh dear! Even so, I remember the palaver when I did the same thing in reverse many years ago and wouldn't like to add that to the stress of moving house.

You will ofte have to provide proof of the divorce (decree nisi / absolute, I can never remember which it it!) or a letter from your solicitor would suffice. Then proof of your maiden name eg birth certificate, although banks etc often have your previous name still on file for old debit cards depending on how long you were married so that would make it easier.

I've just done it and God is it liberating!!! I went to see a solicitor cos I didn't realise it would be so easy!! She told em just to take copies of birth, marriage and divorce certificates to bank etc and send away for a new passport. And it is that easy - banks, doctors etc did it straight away!! And kids are being knowwn by maiden name at school - their choicea s their dad won't have anything to do with them Sad. But it's much easier than you think to do it and feels great!

there is no legal necessity to use your husband's name, it's a choice thing isn't it? As such, you can use your maiden name as that is actually your true and legal name. Although...as you would have had to show your marriage certificate to be able to use your married name with banks, passport office etc, the same will be true in reverse and a copy of the decree nisi/absolute will be required.

Re credit checks, they ask for previous names used and addresses so your credit history should still be complete

I emailed my local registry office and asked for further information and found out there was no requirement to pay a solicitor but that you could write a formal statement and send it to everyone. They were ever so helpful.

Do email them and ask for advice!
