How DO you find a cheaper mortgage??

I keep hearing about people shopping around for mortgages and would be interested to compare what we pay with other mortgages on the market. I have had a look at moneysupermarket but they seem to want someone to ring me to discuss it - I don't really want to do that, I just want something online where I can see what other repayments with other banks would be. Any advice?

Hi I went online and someone called me back I am now in the process of changing my mortagae and have manged to save £90 a m onth on it. It might be worth getting someone to call you back. The guy I went for was independant so he did give me the best deal. Moneysupermarket I think are independant.

Have a look at Charcoline , they give you a good idea what deals you can get. I've always used this to get an idea of what rate we should be able to get then used an independent financial advisor and he's been able to come up with some very good rates. He's started charging now so I'm not using him next time round but will be using a lady my friend has recommended who doesn't charge a fee.

Motley fool website has a list of best buys, plus discussion boards i you want advice - the people there are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful.

The Observer money also does lists of best mortgages - this is where we found out about ours.

We change out mortgage every few years or so for better deals - DH and our IFA (also a friend) check them our more regularly than that to see what the best deals are and change when appropriate.

We use Charcol too.
You have to pay £5 now but worht it in my view as their site is extensive and easy to use.
Interestingly though, the smaller your mortgage, the less likely you are to be able to save any money.
When you add up arrangement fees etc and even it all out over the term of the mortgage agreement (say 3 years)they all sem much of a muchness.
I believe that if your mortgage is over £100K it is more worth shopping around.
Also, worth checking with your own lender what they have on offer.
My understanding is they are now obliged to ofeer all deals to all customers and they can't save the best for new customers but I might be wrong on that.

I love this site Martin is on tv daily too saving people cash. YOu can either download or send for the London and Country guide to cheaper mortgages - Martin recommends them - they search whole country for free - but I think they charge you a fee if you decide to take up the offer. Might be worth downloading the guide.
