Rossendales persuing

Anyone any experience of this lot? Have very recently had a letter and two phone calls from Rossendales. Letter says that I owe nearly £800.00 - debt been transferred to them from a collections agency that ages and ages ago wrote to me about same alleged debt. But they offered very much smaller amounts to clear it.
Trouble is: 1) I feel for almost certain that I cleared the debt (I think it was goods bought 11 years ago and 2) it would be statute barred in any case because it was at least six years from the time of any last payment to when I first heard from this other agency.
We have moved house several times since then and I'm ashamed to say that I don't have all the records from a decade ago that I should .... but I'm not running away - I really believe it was paid off or that, if not, it was years until I heard from anyone.

I'm concerned about the calls - we are ex-dir so goodness knows how they got hold of the number. I don't acknowledge my identify - but next thing I know bailiffs will call round and an article in last weekend's Sunday Times portrayed this coming as very aggressive (and CEO, btw, earns in excess of £1m per year).
I haven't written. I should? This won't go away and I'm really worried!

This sounds like the kind of problem CAB could help you with.

fergoose · 15/11/2011 15:12

They won't send bailiffs- they may threaten doorstep collectors, but they have no legal rights to do or collect anything. They cannot send a bailiff unless there is a valid court order.

Don't write, or call them.

There is heaps of advice online or visit CAB

Def see CAB it might amount to harassment

Thanks very much Doodle and fergoose - very helpful links and advice.
Rossendales getting very nasty - daily calls just about - hanging up on me - threatening letters. I guess this debt, if it exists, is statute barred but I need to follow this up via a letter to them as CAG site suggests.

You are right about bailiff, fergoose - they simply mention door step collectors but are now on about possible legal action. Can they do that if debt (and I'm not at all sure it really exists) is statute barred, I wonder?

Oh, I want to shake them off. Thanks again.

I doubt they can take legal action. There is a letter you can write about the telephone harassment isn't there - I would send that, but don't sign it.

Next time they call try this www.tellows.co.uk
Only insert the phone number and you get more information about them.
you can even find out where the caller comes from!

Be aware, although it may be statute barred but it can still go down as a current default on your credit record so in the long run it may be worth paying it. Can you ask your bank for records to prove it has been paid? I haven't kept receipts form 10 years ago so you're not that unsual!!!!
