We are with halifax andi would recommend them - we left them briefly to go to alliance and leicester for an incentive and soon switched back.

Another 2 votes for First Direct from this household.

northernmonkey · 01/10/2011 21:41

Another vote for natwest here, I find them fantastic and wouldn't ever go back to halifax

Bumply · 01/10/2011 22:59

Another vote for First Direct. Been with them 18 years. Only issue is shortage of HSBC branches in Scotland for doing over the counter stuff.

redheelsandwine · 01/10/2011 23:11

Natwest here, had a fraud on Halifax account years ago and the way we was treated was not how we treat our customers at Natwest. Can you tell who I work for hehe? But no seriously, I think we are good at what we do xx

sanecatlady · 02/10/2011 09:11

First Direct. Been with them for 19 years, always helpful never any problems.

mankyscotslass · 02/10/2011 09:30

First Direct. Been with them over 20 years, never had a problem.

Lloyds - never had any problems, been with them for about 20 years, dealt with a case of fraud on our account really efficiently and quickly on a Sunday morning (recovered about £5k and reimbursed and subsequent charges). Call you in for regular face-to-face review meetings, but aren't pushy - the lady at our last review meeting admitted that they couldn't better out current mortgage and advised us on how to deal with some accidental adverse credit.

Wouldn't touch either Barclays or Natwest with a bargepole. The rudest person I've ever spoken to was from Barclays - basically accused us of lying when we tried to close an account with an overdraft, despite us having a stamped paying-in stub clearly showing that we had banked a cheque from another account to clear the overdrawn amount - the cheque later turned up in the space between two desks at their branch. Natwest are the most useless bank where I live - I honestly don't know anyone with a good word to say about them.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 02/10/2011 10:02

Left Lloyds after being with them for over 20 years because I discovered that, far from my loyalty being rewarded, they had been ripping me off for years. My (very good credit rating) colleague left her Nat West branch literally in tears after asking for an overdraft facility and being treated like a piece of crap.

I think experience varies from place to place. I also thing the less complicated your banking needs, the better the service you get.

Thanks everyone

We will have a look at First Direct, Handelsbanken and Lloyds

Nationwide are really good- very easy to get hold of.

Gonzo33 · 05/10/2011 16:09

Having worked for RBS under the Natwest hat for 5 years I can honestly say I would not touch either with a very long barge pole. I found the service sub standard.

I have banked with First Direct (When I worked at HSBC) and found them to be one of the best banks going, but the lack of counter service at the time caused problems so I switched to Barclays, and to be honest have had nothing but good service off of them.

If I could be bothered to change now I think I probably would change to First Direct.

feelingratheroverwhelmed · 05/10/2011 16:29

Another vote for Nationwide here. Don't touch any of the Santander banks with a very long pole, they are truly rubbish.
