Just in case anyone is interested.....

I checked my council tax banding on here www.voa.gov.uk/council_tax/cti_home.htm
and looked at all my neighbours too. Discovered that we were on the same or higher banding as lots of our neighbours in much bigger houses. So... I complained. Got a letter the other day saying very sorry, they've changed our banding. No sign of any cheque so I phoned up and was promised that the council ahve to repay all over payments back till the date we moved into our house!! Wayhay!! August 2000! Got a leter from the council detail overpayments at about £1400 but almost £400 will be taken off our current bill and the rest will be sent out in a cheque! Woohhoooo!! My CT bill for the next 3 months is £30!

Worth a go!

sorry, not very good at this link bit!! Just a newbie! Go to www.voa.gov.uk then click on the photo of a row of houses under 'council tax check your band'. It's on the right hand side of the page, top section in Quick Links.
Hope that helps!

The reason you have probably found this (and I'm not expert so anyone please feel free to correct) is because the bandings where done years ago so now houses that would have used to be about the same priceish have now totally changed because of the surge in the housing market, the government are putting off re-banding houses as this would leave a lot of people with even larger council tax bills that they can't pay just because there house has shot up in value so much.

Try this

followthestarlover · 15/12/2005 21:11

hmmm ONE flat in our entire block has a lower banding, after it being disputed...

calpopscalum · 15/12/2005 21:15

our hosue was brand new 5 years ago and I thoguht the banding was wrong then - same as a big 5 bed with double garage and above another smaller 5 bed! I was told we had more living space as the 5 bed was over their garage and ours wasn't!!! Er?! They have a huge 5 bed house, we have a small 4 bed!!!!

They are still using 1991 prices to value the bandings across the board whether they are new build or not. Just that someone cocked up basically but I'm sure it happens quite often going by the intelligence of the guy who came out to see me 5 years ago!!!!

Interesting. We discovered we were on a higher banding than our 3 different neighbours who live in exactly the same type of house. I complained and we were told that nothing could be done because we didn't query the original valuation/banding in 1991. We didn't move into the house until 1999 so that would have been a bit difficult! I might try again.

well worth trying - probably depends on the person you speak to at the valuation office. The person this time was really helpful. Keep bombarding them - I phoned this time whereas 5 years ago I wrote - probably easier to ignore a letter! I also read out a list of all our neighbours and their banding - taken from their web site. Good luck!
