Oppositve sex children over 10 cannot share a bedroom - is this an urban myth?

I've heard a lot of people say that opposite sex children can't share a bedroom once they are over 10.

I can find no reference to this on any government websites, except that if you are living in these conditions then your local council may prioritise you for housing if you are waiting on a housing list. So is this an urban myth?

Who would stop you?

If you live in a council house, I have heard that if you have opposite sex children, they will allocate a bedroom each if they are over the age of 10. Don't know where it is written though.

Was handy for me as I was given a 5 bed house

Freckle · 28/11/2005 20:07

I think this "myth" refers to local authority housing regulations. Don't think it applies to families who rent privately or are owner-occupiers.

softmusk · 28/11/2005 20:28

when friend said this to some one from council was told yeh it is right but what were going to do call the police

santabops · 28/11/2005 20:31

refers to housing and whether it is over crowded.
Different sex mustn't share a bedroom after the age of 11 and smae sex aren't to share after the age of 16.

In this council, overcrowding and homelessness have gotten so accute b/c housing prices are so high, children of the opposite sex over 10 are regularly left in the same bedroom.

nooka · 28/11/2005 21:54

Yes, purely about social housing, and it's probably only good practice anyway. Might be for fostering too.

Twiglett · 28/11/2005 21:57

yes

the bedroom police come round and inspect you when your first child reaches the age of 10

am surprised people don't know about this highly-trained division of HM Police force

.. snruk

Oooh Twiglett I'm looking forward to my visit from the bedroom police.

I like a man in uniform with a big toolbelt...
