Do you get less help as a single mum with a mortgage?

I am just about to take on a mortgage which will be cheaper monthly than paying rent. I have no idea what help I will get and after going from site to site with endless benefits calculators, I'm still non the wiser. So far I understand I'll get maternity pay (£126) and Child Benefit (£20) my mortgage will be £160 (this is obviously all per week) This is without food and bills. Do I need to withdraw my application fast? I'm white as a sheet with stress. (19 weeks pregnant and now single)

I'm allowed to post whatever I like so long as it is not against the talk policy here, which this question is not.

It is not for you to tell me where or what to post.

Is the father in the picture? If so, what can he contribute?

GypsyMoth · 15/07/2011 10:51

Er, no, not 'parental maintenence', no!! Op is entitled to nothing from him if unmarried!

The child maintenance, yes, CHILD, doesn't kick in til baby is born!!

So my question still stands, wtf is 'parental maintenence??!

If he doesn't work it will be £5 weekly, if he does, it should be 15% of his wage.

But you should never rely on this money fir living costs, certainly not for housing costs! If he has more kids/loses his job/moves abroad then op could find a huge drop in maintenance with no notice

lachesis · 15/07/2011 11:03

How shocking, ilovetiffany, that a parent could get away with paying so little and then just stop paying with no recourse!

GypsyMoth · 15/07/2011 11:05

I have 4th with my ex. He remains unemployed, so we get £5 a week. £1.25 a week per child.

4th? I mean 4 dc!

Hi,

I suggest you try some freelancing or work for mums jobs parallely. There are plenty of freelancer sites. All you need is to establish a good profile there and it can give a secure feeling as there would be an income from there. Thats how I handle my family being a single mom. That would certainly help in paying the mortgages and still survive better.

Kind Regards,
Emma
