I start my job (first after being a SAHM for a few years) in a few weeks, and I'll be earning about £3 an hour. It's an apprenticeship in the library, I can't wait! :)

DoNotTakeMeSiriusly · 07/07/2011 21:16

£794 an hour.

DoNotTakeMeSiriusly · 07/07/2011 21:17

Shit no! £7.94 an hour! Blush

Portofino · 07/07/2011 21:19

About 28 euros an hour gross. Pay a lot of tax in Belgium though.....

TableVamp · 07/07/2011 21:20

Lizzy - am in London but do quite a lot of commercial which pays quite well.

Although since having DS I work for half the amount of hours!!!

Lizzylou · 07/07/2011 21:38

Aaah, Table.
Can I ask, how did you get into being a Barrister? I work in Legal recruitment (NW) and it is flooded with people who did Bar school and now are paralegals for little more than minimum wage. I have to say, lots of them I would have loved to have "found" at 6th form and swerved them into another career.
It is so hard to get pupillages etc, then to get to your level. Do you think they should set the bar higher at Bar school?

ByTheSea · 07/07/2011 21:44

About £32.60 not including bonus

TableVamp · 07/07/2011 21:53

Lizzy - you are right it is so so competitive to get a pupillage. I was just lucky I guess...

Straight out of uni, then bar school, masters then into pupillage. I did a bit of paralegalling during my masters too.

Yes I agree that he standard going into bar school should be higher. The problem is they are private institutions charging people an awful lot of money. Hence, they take pretty much everyone who can afford it...

Lizzylou · 07/07/2011 21:56

Bang on Table.
I have people who've got C's/D's at A-Level who've paid to do bar school??? In my day when A's were fewer, that is bad, but now? Disgraceful!

Good for you though, I would love to be a shit hot Barrister, enjoy.

Georgimama · 07/07/2011 21:59

£16.85. I actually have an annual salary rather than hourly rate though.

It's not just the bar, there are too many people doing the LPC who have no hope of getting a training contract.

TableVamp · 07/07/2011 22:15

You're right Georgimama - but a lot easier to get a TC than a pupillage. Plus the LPC doesn't cost quite as much. Also, a lot people on the LPC already have TCs at firms who are paying for the LPC. That was certainly the experience amongst my contemporaries.

Lizzylou · 07/07/2011 22:20

Not anymore Table! NO TC's around unless you are creme de la creme.
Georgi's right. I do think that LPC courses should stop when someone is getting dd/ee at A-level, they shouldn't let them on.
I think your thinking LLB grad will go the Ilex route in all honesty.

TableVamp · 07/07/2011 22:27

Oh wow - well in that case I'm probably not being cynical in thinking the LPC/BVC is just a huge money making scam then!!

Rubitue · 07/07/2011 23:01

I'm lucky enough to have a husband who works 12hr days so I can be a SAHM so £0 myself, but I stake a claim to 50% of DH's for domestic and parenting services, so £85 Wink.

Mumblechum - know what you mean, in my previous life as a chartered accountant the difference between my COR and actual pay was ridiculous (from my point of view!)

mumblechum1 · 07/07/2011 23:08

Rubitue, yeah, that's why I've got a little freelance business on the side. I charge less than half of what I do in my high street practice but keep most of it for myself after tax etc, so it's win win for client and me.

scarlettsmummy2 · 07/07/2011 23:16

I have a 2.1llb Hons and I know I really struggled to get it, hence why I knew the bar or legal inst wasn't for me. It baffles me when people with average grades then feel they should pay a fortune to do a legal conversion course or lpc. I think they are delusional. So many don't make it.

mo3d · 07/07/2011 23:22

£6 hour as a waitress and I really enjoy it. I like the tips too!!

mooloo · 08/07/2011 09:19

£19.00 ph

Gonzo33 · 08/07/2011 12:17

GBP22 per hour. Hubby is armed forces and as they are "paid" to be on duty 24/7 his comes out at GBP3.80 per hour.

MugglesandLuna · 08/07/2011 12:19

Same as Debs - 37p an hour (including the night shift :()

Ambers123 · 08/07/2011 18:53

Not enough!

sleeplessinderbyshire · 08/07/2011 22:30

£30-40 in my main job but £70-90 for some other more freelance stuff I do
