Getting advice on tax credits

Does anyone know if it's possible to walk into a tax office and ask for help working out what the paperwork means from the tax office? I am having massive trouble understanding how they've reached the amount they've overpaid me - and I'm a well-educated woman. I just want to sit down with someone who can reassure me that they've got it right. Are the CAB contacts very knowledgeable (I suspect they may know as much as I do, or do they have experts to hand)? I have tried ringing the tax credits helpline but I have found them to be quite aggressive and quite rude to me (do they treat all callers with such suspicion?) I'm getting so worried about it I'm thinking of paying a tax consultant to help me untangle it - but really I think the tax office should be able to explain it to me. Has anyone else tried this?

I did ask an account friend once if he could help me understand the payments and letters - He said he had never in his life seen such rubbish and as a senior partner in a well establish account firm thought it was a load of *rcok and pc generated rubbish.

There are though people on here that work for the same and have been extremly helpful to people in the past - possibly one will pass and could offer help or assistance

CAB are good Ive used them and theyre on your side.

my mum does CAB and she does seem to know a lot about benefits & tax credits - and they can also feed it into the system.

I wouldn't advise going to an accountant - most don't have an idea about tax credits. If you do then you want to make damn sure they are specialist in the area.
