Hi Im wondering what tax credits I am entitled to. My partner and I dont live together. He does however work part time. Which tax credit are we entitled to. I assume it will be child tax credit claimed by me and not working tax credit by him. Im confused. Any advice? Thanks.

If you enter your household income details into this Benefit Checker you'll get quite a good idea of what, if any, benefits you are entitled to apply for. If you don't live together, your calculations would be based on your income alone. He would be counted as a separate household and would need to do the calculations for himself, I expect.

so are you saying we should both apply for the different tax credits? It seems wrong we should both be able to that for the one child.

No - only one of you will get tax credits and that would be who the child lives with ie you.

ChasingSquirrels · 17/06/2011 15:38

surely you could both claim separately for what you are entitled to - but each child can only be claimed for once.

you probably need to be aware of how many nights he stays over etc, I don' know about the rules on that.

but there are working tax credits - for which children aren't relevant, and child tax credits.
so he may be entitled to working tax credit depending on his income.

Or it maybe that you should make a joint claim - depending on how often he stays over etc.

Probably worth speaking to the tax credit helpline about it.

I think it is a myth about the number of nights someone stays over - it is looked at as whether you are a couple or not ie if you are financially linked, socialise together etc. I would definitely speak to the tax credits helpline about it.

ok Im back. at the start of the relationship I checked how many nights over we are allowed and its 3 at each house. Not a problem at all. I think I got confused thinking both were to do with children as they were both mentioned at the same time on a baby website email I recieved. From what Ive worked out. DP wouldnt be entitled as he does less than 30 hours a week. I can claim child tax credits though when baby arrives.

The deleted message is someone who is spamming all over mumsnet for some website or other. They seem to keep posting all over the place (and then getting deleted) again and again.

ah thank you.
