How do I find out if my name is on our house deeds?

I understand from recent threads on here that ownership of a house is determined by whose name is on the deeds (not the mortgage) but does anyone know how I can find out whose name the deeds are in?

My DP and I bought the house he used to live in with his ex-wife in the summer (big mistake but that's another story...) We have a joint mortgage but I don't remember there being any mention of the deeds when we bought the house. I assume DPs solicitor (they did our conveyancing as well as DPs divorce) would have made sure that DP and I were named on the deeds but I just want to make sure

if your name is on the mortgage it has to be on your deeds.

You can find out from Land Registry Online by searching in property search and typing your address details in - think it costs £2 for a copy of the register.

Yes, your solictor would have sorted this for you. Call and check if you are worried.

Deeds have been largely superceded by land registry records

NAAM is everything OK?

NotActuallyAMum · 15/11/2005 11:26

Thanks everyone, that's put my mind at rest

ninah yes everything's fine, it's just that I kept reading about deeds and knew there was no mention of it and I didn't want to find that in the future there may be a problem with DPs ex - you know what ex-wives can be like

Just posted you a message on your thread

a bundle of deeds are for unregistered land - a Certificate of Title is for registered land, most areas have compulsory registration now.

The house does not have to be in joint names in order for you to be named on the mortgage. The only requirement is that the registered proprietor is on the mortgage, so best to check at the Land Registry.
