thinking about doing internet banking, have statements etc filling kitchen drawers and generally making a mess!! If i do internet banking, can i do away with statements? I hate the idea of throwing statements, bank stuff away for fear of someone somewhere getting hold of my details. Plus would help me keep control of finances if i can log on at all times to see how poor i really am!

PiccadillyCircus · 09/11/2005 12:11

We do online banking with the Halifax and get paperless statements

tiredemma · 09/11/2005 12:13

LilacBump · 09/11/2005 12:15

I think you really need to print them off and keep them - you are supposed to keep financial records for 5 years for tax purposes (???) and I'm not sure they are accessible online for that long. (Well mine only has the last year but it's A&L and not strictly paperless so may be different.)

Get a couple of lever-arch files or box files and stick them in there as back-up.

tiredemma · 09/11/2005 12:33

can i do away with credit card statements then from the same bank?

i dont keep ne of my sttements, jsut rip them up and bin them, I have internet banking, but tsb don't seem to do a paperless option tht I've seen. Wish they would, as it is a waste of paper.

Redtartanlass · 09/11/2005 12:41

I've been with First Direct for years and all I do is download my statements several times a year onto my PC. WHen I needed paper statements for mortgage, I just ordered on-line.

On-line banking is great!!! And First Direct are brill!!

tiredemma · 09/11/2005 12:45

I do internet banking (as it makes life so easy - who has time to go into banks all the time etc?)but I also like having paper bank statements, I do file these away with other bills etc. I shred anything that I am going to put in the bin - just in case! (However, I am an accountant - so I can't let go of the 'baggage' IYSWIM)

gingerbear · 09/11/2005 12:51

oi Emma, are you Bonnie and Clyde then or wot?

gingerbear · 09/11/2005 12:53

I get statements online, but only for up to 6 months. I keep paper ones in a lockable filing cabinet for 2 years, then shred em and compost them.

tiredemma · 09/11/2005 12:53

Nope! Dp is going as RAMBO (!) and im still toying with various ideas, ie- dorothy from WOZ, princess laya from star wars, lots of others but cant decide!!

OP posts:
Kelly1978 · 09/11/2005 13:12

gingerbear · 09/11/2005 13:18

tiredemma · 09/11/2005 13:19

sorry kelly, go into 'internet banking' then down side it says 'online statements'

but you have to go from home page of lloydstsb.com

OP posts:
tiredemma · 09/11/2005 13:19

According to dh Janh is right - you need to keep a paper copy of bank statements for 6 years for tax purposes. Along with 6 years worth of payslips, P60s, P45s and all of the other assorted gubbins that goes with it.

I want to see the pics on 'member profiles'
