Shit! Just had a letter from HMRC, someone has tried to apply for a Health in Pregnancy grant in my name

Just had a letter from HMRC saying someone has applied for a Health in Pregnancy grant in my name.

Just tried calling them and they weren't any more forthcoming than what they had said in the letter, which is basically 'someone has used your details, we've stopped them, and it wasn't us that left your details on a train did it'.

What do I do now?

If they know the claim is likely to be fraudulent and have stopped it then you should treat that as positive. However, if you're worried that your details may be being used more widely, it may be a good idea to get a copy of your credit record and check. Identity fraud is extremely common and it pays to be on your toes.

Thanks. Just ordering some credit checks now. I don't know what details or how they knew it wasn't me.

Anyone can get a name and address off the electoral roll. But if they didn't have your correct NI number or some other detail then it would quickly get stopped. My credit card called me a few weeks ago to query a payment made on my card because the vendor had come up as 'suspicious' and they thought it was fraud... which it was. I think banks and HMRC etc., look for patterns.

V. Odd bumper... os there any chance you filled the form out onliine, to see if you were eligible, then abandoned it, but the computer sent it thriugh IYSWIM?

i thought the health in pregnancy grant had been scrapped??

I had that too. You can ask them what info they had that was yours (they'll tell you that). In my case they had only my name and NI number - all the other details were wrong.
