We claimed working tax credits in december 2004 and benefits from it until october 2005. Then they declared we were overpayed so we didnt get anything anymore but it went towards reimbursing it. 7 years later we still owe them 2000 pounds, I dont understand. We just benefit from it for 10 months, how come we still owe them money ?

We have already a lot of debts, it is going to finish us.

I would go and see Citizens advice with all the paperwork and see if they can help you, I don't know anything about tax credits but it does seem a lot to owe - how much did you claim in total over 10 months?

Chil1234 · 10/05/2011 16:54

You've spent 7 years reimbursing payments made for 10 months and still owe £2000?! If I were you I'd be getting together all the records of the money received in tax credits, all the information about your earnings from 2004 to the present and then, as suggested above, make an appointment with CAB, both about this and also your debt problem.

confusedandsilly · 10/05/2011 17:01

A bit more that 2000 pounds but we have been giving it back over the years, I mean the overpayment we got.

I am feeling completely overwelmed, we have already 30 k debt which we are repaying, we are both earning a decent income...you should see the attitude of dh. He says not to worry, that I wont be affected by it, that he will pay for it himself (we have a joint account), he doesnt even try to investigate it, I would do it but I'm not an english speaker. We have no asset, nothing, no house, I just have my children and my clothes.

You need a breakdown of the actual amount paid and overpaid and how much you have paid back by not receiving it. Possibly you ceased to be entitled to help at some point so stopped making the repayments. Is your dh normally straight with you regarding finances ? Your English sounds good enough to follow it up to me or ,if you feel not, CAB or a council Help Shop adviser could help you do so, and negotiate on the other debts. However you need your dh fully on board with sorting this out too - to be honest about the extent to it and stop overspending.

Chil1234 · 10/05/2011 18:30

It's not good enough for your DH to say 'leave it to me' and then do nothing. He may be happy with his head in the sand but if it's causing you real anxiety, it's not acceptable. You're quite at liberty to take the details of your household income, your joint account, debts & expenditure to the CAB and make an appointment just for yourself. Go with an English speaking friend if you're worried about that. Sometimes, when you're married to someone that can't or won't take finances seriously, you have to take things in hand for the sake of your own peace of mind. And, in the meantime, if you really feel overwhelmed, it may also benefit you to talk to a doctor.

I dont understand we have been given 2112.04 pounds between dec 2004 and sep 2005 and we owe them 2149.99 pounds. What they are saying is that we should never have tax credit ??? I was working part time at that time with one child earning 9 k a year and dh was on 26-27 ??
I just dont get what happen.

Have you rung them up and asked them if they have their figures right, have you asked them if you were ever entitled to anything? I think there is a govt website where you can put your earnings in and it tells you what you're entitled to.

Contact CAB if still not sorted.

confusedandsilly · 10/05/2011 19:03

He is on the phone with them having some explanation.

Hope you get it sorted, it does sound like they've got something wrong.

confusedandsilly · 10/05/2011 19:14

Apparently we got 2814 pounds awarded to us in 2007-2008 and 808 pounds in 2008-2009 and it should show in the account but nothing is coming up.

A family with a joint income below £55k would have been entitled to £540/year in CTC - that was the minimum amount. So, if you had to pay back £2000 since 2004, that should have been done inside 4 years. The website that shows your current entitlement is this one Benefits Checker. Input as much information as you can.

Dilligaf81 · 14/05/2011 00:58

Can you ask the bak details they are ending it to ? Is it possible your DH has been receiving it into another account ?
Or am I misunderstanding what you are saying.
