Child Tax Credit query re. new income threshold

PassTheTwiglets · 06/05/2011 11:20

We were receiving Child Tax Credits but since the income threshold changed our payments will probably stop (I'm not sure but I think DH earns very slightly over the threshold). I called the Tax Credit People today and they say it hasn't stopped but but it probably will when we send in our renewal pack.

So, my query is will they just stop it from when we return our renewal pack? Or will it be backdated to when the threshold changed and then I'll be expected to pay back the credits I received from whatever date the threshold changed?

Not sure if that makes sense?!?!

I think it will stop from when new threshold came in,which was 6th april.
So if your DH's earnings are above the threshold, and they say you not not entitled to any tax credits this year, they would want any overpayments repaid.
Have you had your renewal pack yet?

You could check your entitlement here If you suspect that you are now not entitled to CTC but have received some payments in April/May, it may be a good idea to keep those in a savings account somewhere just in case you're asked to pay something back.

Not had renewal pack yet, no. They say it could be up to the end of June before it arrives. Oh rats, I'm going to have them back loads, aren't I? I do'nt mind not having it but I do mind having to pay iot back as a lump sum! The guy on the phone said he could stop the payments now so that I didn't have to pay a lot back - but I told him not to stop them yet, just on the off-chance that they wouldn't ask me to pay them back! Chil, that's a very good idea about putting the payments into a separate account. I will do that.

The threshold is £41-something k. Oddly the guy couldn't tell me the exact figure.

Just found it online - £41,300.

Did you run your stats through the benefit checker? If it shows that your new entitlement is zero then you know to save the payments in anticipation of having to pay something back. If it shows you're still entitled to something it might stop you worrying unnecessarily.

PassTheTwiglets · 06/05/2011 15:00

Yes, Chil, it did say we would get zero. I will definitely save it in case! Thanks for the advice, people!

they will have calculated your award for the new tax year 11/12 based on your actual income form 2009/10 (unless you informed them of a major change since the end of 2009/10 tax year) so if your husbands income is remaining roughtly the same they will already have taken the new limits into account when calculating what you are entitled to.

I got a letter through saying we were above the new threshold so they weren't going to bother sending us a renewal pack unless we contacted them. I phoned up as i've got part time as my income has gone down

PassTheTwiglets · 06/05/2011 23:13

I don't think so Morph, because before they only asked "do you earn between £whatever and £50000 and he did - but now the threshold is lower than £50k so they will surely ask if we earn less than the threshold....
