Overpaid Tax Credits - any way out?

With recent government changes - I'll now no longer be eligible for tax credits. About 8 yrs or so ago, I think ( I really can't remember the details) I must have been overpaid some tax credits. Instead of getting the small amount I'd still be due - each yr, instead, the IR deducted from the overpaid amount what I would have got every time.

However, as I'm no longer in the category to get any at all, I owe well over £3000 apparently! Shock

Has anyone else been in this position? Can I challenge this, as the overpayment - IF indeed this were my fault anyway and not the Tax Credit office's fault - was several yrs ago now? I know I can pay back v v gradually but I'm not 100% sure that I should be paying anything back at all.

Can anyone advise me on my next move with this? Has anyone been in a similar situation and found that in the end, they didn't owe anything and the Tax Credit office got it wrong?

I have had a refund for an overpayment, I managed to prove that it was tax credits fault, I did have to appeal but it did go in my favour and they paid me the money back as I challenged it a couple of years after it had happened and I had repaid most of it!
If you search my name I posted a thread when I actually got the repayment

I would suggest that you speak to someone like the CAB. Because tax credits are managed by HMRC who are used to getting money back from tax dodgers, they are very difficult to argue against without help.

Thanks whoops. Will search your thread. Chil1234, I'm not sure if what they want back from me is merited or not and haven't had time to see if I can track down any paperwork from 8 yrs or so ago....So I don't know if what I owe is their mistake or a legitmate amount. I can't remember receiving such a huge sum - which must have actually been more than this as I pay off some each yr so far, I think - but maybe I did. Just want to make sure it's valid or not.
