Up to now I've cut DSs hair, something I said I'd do untill they got old enough to realise I'm rubbish at it not a professional.

So that time has arrived and I was planning on taking them to the barbers today however I've just checked out the prices and it's TWENTY-SIX euros EACH Shock

This is WAY too much surely?

There is another barber about which I haven't checked out yet (need to get over the shock of the first one before I venture there!!!

I was told by a hairdresser who didn't like children that some will price it so high that they don't get any customers - because they don't want them.
So when I see a price like that, I assume it's a child-hater and steer clear Grin

tigercametotea · 07/04/2011 13:01

It's £7 a cut here at the local barber's. I wouldn't take mine to a hairdresser though, far too expensive. I think they said it was £15 there, if done by a stylist (not a senior one...)

Kewcumber · 07/04/2011 15:09

PureBlood - when I said £12, I meant they pay me £12 for the privilege of cuting DS's hair. Is it not like that in Dublin?

PureBloodMuggle · 07/04/2011 17:29

Prunnhilda that thought had occured to me!!!

Kewcumber sadly no, it isn't, I might suggest it next time I'm in the barbers, I'm sure they'll be open to suggestions Smile

Best price I found, withing my area, was ?10. Decent cut AND they got a lolly each.

Might move to Germany though

When mine were little it was a DIY job with the clippers. The boys aren't so keen on haircuts at home anymore, but I still do DH's!

The boys go to the barbers in the village. They charge £4 for under 14s, and and £6.50 for older lads.

scaryteacher · 07/04/2011 22:21

10 euros here just outside Brussels for my 15yo.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 07/04/2011 22:25

I paid £22.50 for my 3 to have their hair cut today, 2 Grade 2's, and a Grade 1. Used to be £19.50 during the week, guess she's put her prices up. Bog standard barber, definitely no frills (hair gets swept off the floor if she gets time between customers Grin). Cheapest I know of round here is £5, but they're really arsey with the boys if they're particularly ticklish or grumpy when I take them so I pay a bit more for someone that's great with them.

NotJustKangaskhan · 08/04/2011 13:22

Way too much. I spent £3 or 4, at a training barber just a few minutes walk outside of town. They did lovely shaping around the back (the part I'm awful at) that I can now trim easily when he wants.

The same people have a proper one in town for £7 (with most being between £7-10 for child's haircut). Have a look for places at the outskirts of town and training places, saves a fortune.

PureBloodMuggle · 11/04/2011 10:18

Honestly NotJustKangaskhanNotJustKangaskhan I've been in Ireland for over 10 years now and have come to the conclusion that no matter how much I try I'll never be able to save a fortune. Whenever I come back home (I'm from England) I feel so annoyed over this when I compare!

The whole place is just massivey over priced in every aspect of everyday life!!!

Given the idea about the training barber I just checked out the evening course at the barbering school (ie train myself and be able to do it properly then myself)

?2,000 for a six week course...

gives up

£2 for a trim and £5 hair cut but it was very long.

christinecagney · 22/04/2011 09:12

How old are your DCs? If school or nursery age - ask around in the playground for a mum (or dad) who is a hairdresser. IME there are loads of hairdressers not currently working (SAHM etc) who will do your DCs hair for cash, often at your house or theirs. I found this was far the best way with hysterical toddlers: sit in own high chair, watching CBeebies whilst being hand fed maltesers for every 10 seconds without a shriek etc ( I know 'rod for my own back' etc but at least it got done without too much drama).

activate · 22/04/2011 09:14

£9

cece · 22/04/2011 09:22

£7 here.

MillsAndDoom · 22/04/2011 09:28

Cheap barbers it's a pound per year of age.

If I can get away with it I get the clippers out on DS [skinflint]

namechangertoday · 22/04/2011 17:31

DS just had his first hair cut for free - aged 10 months, that boy is going to be expensive if I want his hair short, luckily I hate it and will be growing it back asap.

namechangertoday · 22/04/2011 17:31

Be glad you don't have girls !

ragged · 24/04/2011 13:37

DH still cuts DD's hair (she's 9yo & very vain, too). Uses clippers on younger DS's hair.

8 quid here for a boy cut.

Gonzo33 · 01/05/2011 05:07

?5 for my ds (Cyprus) who is 9 and free for my dd who is 1. ?20 for me.

"Prunnhilda: So when I see a price like that, I assume it's a child-hater and steer clear"

I have images of Roald Dahls the witches now!

mumcanIaskaquestion · 01/05/2011 10:52

I have to force my hairdresser to take money if she doing more then fringe trims for dd and a full trim for ds. As she feels doing full colour and cut for me and mum so it's nothing for her to do dc hair at the same time.

heather1980 · 01/05/2011 10:57

i pay £7.50 for both dd and ds1 at my hairdresser. she cuts dds fringe for free though.

BendyBob · 01/05/2011 10:59

£8 at the barbers and they do a v good job.

My dd's are more expensive with a hairdresser but they don't have theirs cut as often as ds.

BabySocksNeverStayOn · 05/05/2011 21:14

I have a mobile hairdresser (found through word-of-mouth). She's great - comes to my house, the boys can watch TV, read a book or whatever. £5 each and she trims mine for £8. I have three DS (4,3 and 11 months and there in NO WAY I would even consider taking them to a salon/hairdresser every 5 weeks. She's great and, although I long for the day I can spend time in a salon, my hair stays looking reasonable!
