my husband works full time and has a gross income of about 30k i work 22.5 hours a week and earn about 16k gross. we pay for two days ofstead childcare a week, £240 a month, which we intend to keep our dd in while im on mat leave. we are due baby two in two weeks and i intend to take a year off.
my husband says we wont get child tax credits after april 1st. is this true?
we live a modest life and really depend on the tax credits.

I think he is right.
www.taxationweb.co.uk/tax-articles/general/tax-credit-changes-in-april-2011-the-facts.html
Use the calculator to check:
www.turn2us.entitledto.co.uk/entitlementcalculator.aspx

With that high an income surely you don't need to depend on tax credits?

From april 2011 income limit for Child Tax Credit is going down from £50,000 to £40,000.So you might not get any like your DH has said. But i would phone them when you get your renewal pack, because you going on ML might make this years income low enough to still get abit.

You can check your potential 2011/12 award on the Turn2Us Benefit Checker Set the calculation year to 2011/12 and run it as a 'what if' based on your new income level, childcare costs and 2 children.

vj32 yes we do as its gross not net,. net we would come out with around 27k a year so i sometimes wonder if i would be better off scrounging around like some people i know and living off the state as by the time we have paid all the bills mortgage water etc it dosnt leave us with much. we dont smoke drink or eat out ever!!! honest.

£46K joint income and you want tax credits ?? this is part of why we are in the shit - sorry this will not be popular but is just the way I feel

HappyMummyOfOne · 06/04/2011 07:44

I'm surprised you get any help with childcare now for one child on that salary, over £25k with one child usually rules people out for childcare assistance.

The change this month means that over £40k there will be very few people that qualify unless they have a high number of children and a lot of childcare costs.

happyinherts · 06/04/2011 07:51

The chap on BBC Breakfast today live from Walthamstowe market is saying that today families will have to work 24 hours a week in order to qualify for anything in wftc. Tell me that's not true. I thought it was April 2012 - not today. Confusing evidence online too, but I'm still sure it's next April.

Does anyone really know?

MumInBeds · 06/04/2011 07:58

The 24 hours a week is next year.

happyinherts · 06/04/2011 08:00

Thanks MuminBeds, that is what I thought. I'm waiting for my CRB check to be finished so that I can start work for this reason.

Somebody needs to tell this 'Simon' guy on BBC Breakfast he isn't up to date with his facts.

taytotayto · 07/04/2011 10:25

if i didnt work and pay tax we would be in even more shit wouldnt we mollymole. perhaps ill go on the dole and take take take like alot of people.
i was looking for advice but as usual there is always some smart ass with nothing to add but their unwanted opinion, i dont want to hear from you as you have nothing to offer.

taytotayto, mine and DP's income is very similar to yours, we have one child in 2 days/week childcare at £280 a month - and we are struggling greatly. Biggish mortgage taken out at the height (5 yrs ago), both on public sector frozen salaries = not much at all spare at the end of the month.

The MN benefits calculator tells me we'll be getting nowt.
