Housing benefit and irregular income

H is moving out at the end of April and I will be claiming increased tax credits, housing benefit and council tax benefit.

I earn about £8,000 a year, but through at least 4 different jobs (keep finding more bits of things to do) which happen at different times of year. These are all paid through payroll but as one of them has a high daily rate, I am overtaxed on that one and claim it back at rhe beginning of each new tax year. There is also a possibility of some new work for which I would be self employed.

How does rhis work? I went to see a council person and have the form to fill in but it seems (probably naturally, as most people have regular jobs) made for people with one job for rhe same amount of hours per week. I work between zero and 56 hours a week although more often lower amounts. Do I count as self employed as I saw there was a box about that suggesting I would need a different form as well. Council person didn't really clear up my confusion.

My other query is about free school meals - I have seen if you earn under £16k or so and get ctc but not wtc (which I think is my position) you are entitled, but what is rhe £16k made up of? Is this my earned income plus tax credits plus housing benefit or some other combination? Am also confused about help with health costs, which seems to have rhe same criteria.

Am also in turmoil about relationship but that can go ib a rekationship thread some time Grin.

Anyone got any thoughts? I will of course fill in the form (with pages of supplementary information) but am concerned about how long it will take the claim to go through. Having seen on another thread that there is a 5 week wait for new tax credit claims I am getting worried about May and June as I will be working then, just not getting paid until the end of June. I usually put the money I earn into a different account and then use it evenly over the year, but am needing to use that to pay for rent from when H goes so things will be tight.

My mum and dad are going to lend me some money if necessary but obviously feel bad about that.

I would suggest using your actual income from last year and working out a reasonable average to declare as your start point. You already keep a good track of your income so that you can claim tax back.... carry on doing this and then, if your circumstances change dramatically from your average, you can change your claim. You're not classed as self-employed.

The question on free school meals is probably best answered with a look at the Turn2Us benefit checker Again, use a reasonable average when entering your wages and hours of work.

Not sure how quickly Tax Credit claims are being processed at the moment but would suggest there that you make regular phone-calls to check progress rather than waiting and hoping for the best. Good luck

Thank you - will look at that website and see what it says. Will be glad when it is all sorted - at the moment I have a sense of limbo about it all (both the practical and emotional although practical easier to focus on I suppose).

Keep focusing on the practical because that'll keep you strong. The only thing that resolves the emotional side of break-up IME is 'time'.... so if you're busy being practical, working hard and keeping everything going, it really helps. FWIW sometimes it takes being put on the spot to discover how resourceful you really are and that can be a major boost to your confidence and sense of self. And don't feel bad about asking your parents for help. If it was your own kids needing help from you, would you hesitate or object? Good luck

Thank you :) Another good thing is I will be busy with work during May and June and hopefully some of July which will help with being busy and money :)

And I know that my mum and dad are happy to help but a tiny bit of me wishes they didn't have to...

Ah well will get through this whatever happens
