Will DH's employer have remittance details going back 3 years?

Argh - just realised DH should have been doing tax returns since April 08.

He is not going to be happy - like me, he has big fear of forms and of money.

Can anyone help me with the following?

He just makes the higher with his main employer, but does some additional work for another employer. Irregular payments - maybe 6 times a year. He notified them he was subject to HR tax about two years ago. The other employer is an Exam Board. Will the accounts department be able to put their hands on all his old remittance advice details? It will be a hassle, won't it? Also, that advice will say the tax rate, won't it?

Cheers

He should be able to get copies either of his end of tax-year certificates (P60) from his other employer or individual copies of payslips. If he pays HRT with his main employer then any other income will be taxed at 40%. The slips may not state the tax rate but they should show a tax-code.

BTW... if he has a fear of forms and money can I recommend to you both a bit of software called 'TaxCalc'? Costs

I think its expecting a lot for a no doubt understaffed finance/HR department to dig out information from 3 years ago. I'd be very reluctant to do it if I was them tbh.

I don't think an employer is obliged to provide more than one copy of the P60 - I think it says on the form that you must keep it safe.

I know this isn't what you want to hear but you should be prepared for this not to be starightforward esp. at this time of year when staff will be working on the current tax year end.

If the second employer has paid by a remittance I don't think they will have deducted tax - do you mean a payslip?

There are special procedures for exam boards because they use a large number of teachers as markers etc. who generally have other jobs. Because of this I expect their internal procedures ought to be able to come up with the remittance advices (which will show the tax deducted) quite easily.

Although employers are only allowed to provide one original P60, they are obliged to keep the information for years so unless they have had a big systems change they should be able to provide this at the press of a button.

thank you all for your replies, and sorry for my delay responding.

chil - i will check out that software. think we both have to do tax returns forever now, so any help needed.

caughtinanet, the bits of paper we have always so casually discarded said remittance advice on them, not pay slips, so i assumed that was what we were looking for. yes, i think i will wait til the end of tax year though!

mranchovy, touch of the button is what i like to hear, thank you!

just got to get him to make the call now...

just to check - will we need p60s from both his main employer and the exam board?

again, thanks in advance for all help

Best to have all the numbers to hand when sorting out tax problems. The basics he needs to know are a) how much he has earned before tax and b) how much tax, NI and pension contribs he has paid.

The software is really good. link here You're guided through all the questions and a running total at the top of the screen tells you if they owe you money or you owe them. Takes a bit of time to set yourself up on the Revenue website with a password etc., but, once you've done that, it's a doddle.

He probably won't have been an employee of the exam board - as I said exam boards have special arrangements where markers are self employed but some tax is witheld from the payments made to them and paid to HMRC on their behalf outside the PAYE system. This means they won't have a P60, although they may have some other kind of annual summary, otherwise I am sure they will be able to run a history of the individual payments and tax witheld.
