How much money do you have to live on after all bills have been paid but not including food and petrol?

We have approx £260 per week after mortgage, bills etc have been paid but need to buy food (£100) and petrol (£40) per week out of this which leaves us around £120 for going out, clothes etc. Was just wondering if this is around average, bit of a nosey question I know but I am interested in how average our living allowance is compared to others, I feel like we are quite comfortable but DP doesn't agree. We are a family of 4 - 2 adults and 2 children, and we save approx £100 per month.

I lost my job recently and if I don't find another one soon I'll have to claim income support which I have worked out will leave me with about £50 per week after all bills are paid. This will have to cover food for me and DD, going out, travel costs, clothes and other bits and pieces like birthday presents etc. God knows how I'm going to cope Sad

After all bills we are left with £1100, which sounds a lot but we are putting away £300 per month away for savings at the moment as we've got a couple of big car related bills coming up (insurance, road tax and service which will prob lead to a couple of repairs which may need doing), so technically bills. £100 each month towards xmas and another £100 towards holiday. £300 goes on food and £100 towards petrol each month which leaves £200 per month to pay for clothes, kids activities, treats, days out, birthday pressies etc which never feels like enough! We are 2 adults, 2 kids and 1 cat.

Just worked mine out. I haven't done it for ages. I have about £650 a month after all the bills and the car is paid for (although I'm rubbish at remembering to put money aside for the car.) That buys most of the food, all petrol and any clothes, presents, treats, savings etc.
DH gets the child benefit and child tax credits paid into his account (about £250) and he buys some food, and things for him (cigarettes Angry and beer).

We're better off than I thought, no wonder I've been managing to save some money.

You've spurred me on. Tomorrow I'm going to go through the old statements and work out how much I spend on petrol and food every month.

We're 2 adults, 1 DD and 2 cats.

Not including food and petrol? Hmm... well we don't have a car and can't afford one. I'd say it'd be around £100-150 per month after bills, rent, etc.

Wow, we must be living in a different world, must be some very high wagers here! Our investments sorry savings are around £25pm! I have no pension as I have never earnt enough to afford one.

We are self employed and take £1400 out of the business combined. Lots of bills come out of the business however my small drawing is spent on childcare, car loan and 1 piece of funiture - actually thats over my takings! The rest on food (approx £600pm) leaving about £300 max to play with over the month. Which really equates to eating out (nice) once, a bit of booze, a few clothes, odd luxury, childrens club fees, gifts.

I buy the majority of clothes second hand on e-bay, I'm more careful with the food shop (aim only once a week), eat at home and cut down on booze, no matter how much you earn I think you need to budget and save as much as possible.

£100pw is pretty comfortable to the majority.

not enough

heliumballoons · 09/04/2011 00:23

After all outgoings (exc food and petrol) £337 a month for me and DS (6).

ragged · 09/04/2011 06:18

What does your DH want to do about it, OP? Do you argue about money?

We are mortgage free and probably have something like 2.5k/month after bills. We save most of that. I find going on holiday extremely stressful so rarely do that, and I don't like to buy or do (most) expensive things, like clothes or pubs. All of my instincts are very frugal (hence why we became mortgage free so quickly). I know we are very lucky.

roundthehouses · 09/04/2011 06:36

200/ week - food and petrol uses up about 100 of that so 100 euros left per week for other misc spending. But clothes, haircuts etc all need to come out of that too so although we are fine we don´t go out ever. Our main treat is having a coffee/pastry/ice cream but even then the money can easily disappear if we indulge too often.

we are 2 adults, 1 child, 1 baby and we don´t save anything.

Sorry, yes I know this is a zombie thread but I just googled disposable income and it threw up good old Mumsnet! Smile
Regular but have NC. As my old name was Easter themed and we're past that now, lol.
I've just worked out next week I'll have £70 per week. For a family of 4. DH pays all the bills.
This week has been a bit crap though as we've only had £10 to play with. Had fun digging the slow cooker out and making cheap but nutritious meals with ingredients we've got in already.
So I'm looking forward to next week as it will feel positively rich compared to this one!
