Vanquis Visa Card - anybody know of it?

DH signed on as unemployed 2 weeks ago. (He is working again now.)
Normally we get regular credit card offerings with 0% for 9 months, APR c 9%, that kind of thing. This week we've had an offer, at 58.6% APR for £150 of credit from this nasty organisation:

That is really shocking Janh!

roisin · 26/10/2005 20:23

Ooh I missed the bit about dh working again now - is it something permanent? Is he happy?

JanH · 26/10/2005 20:26

Hi, roisin! Not permanent, just a 3-month contract atm, but yes, he is v happy!

It is v worrying, isn't it? Am wondering whether to write to my MP. It stinks.

Um - scanning form - no phone number (literally ) or obvious address but in small print in the declaration there is a Bradford address (Vanquis Bank Limited)

I did find a phone no on say no to 0870 and will ring them tomorrow but I bet they won't tell me anything because I'm not DH.

The envelope address is Chatham.

Oh, they charge £19pa for the privilege of having the card.

Oh sorry YG, just realised you meant the job, lol!

No, the buggers never rang - it's the Blackpool one - however yesterday we experienced the joys of the M62 (accident at Huddersfield Ebound about 4pm, standing traffic for about 15 miles) and today he heard on the traffic news that there was an accident at H'field Wbound, as he sailed home on the M55 - and he is really very relieved not to have to face the M62 through the winter.

DH thinks maybe the administrators gave Provident the list of who was made redundant

Jan - I have a good friend who works in the area of credit ratings, etc. He's currently working in Australia, but still has lots of knowledge of the UK scene.

Would you like me to email him, and ask him where he thinks the info might have come from, and whether or not something illegal is going on?

JanH · 26/10/2005 21:18

Oh please do, roisin! I really really want to know!

JanH · 26/10/2005 21:19

Incidentally when I say the administrators "gave" a list I mean sold.

Bloody hell, Jan! That's SOME interest rate

Glad to hear DH has a job - he'll get another one before this one's finished, I'm sure.

soapbox · 26/10/2005 21:22

JanH - can I suggest that you post this on the MotleyFool discussion forums!

Under the dataprotection act your DH can write to his previous employers and ask them directly whether or not they have provided his details to any third parties. He can ask them for all the information on him that they hold on him too. They have a duty of confidentiality to him and if they have breached this he can report them to the data protection folk!

If nothing else its a big inconvenience for them to do so and well, they deserve it don't they!

There actually isn't anything illegal about offering loans at exhorbitant levels of interest. However, I agree that the timing is deeply suspicious!

misdee · 26/10/2005 21:24

oh we gopt one of these leaflets through the door as well. me and peter were shocked, and then posted some junk back to them.

hunkerpumpkin · 26/10/2005 21:25

Interesting thread on moneysavingexpert.com

JanH · 26/10/2005 21:25

Thanks, soapbox! I know the interest is legit, they can charge what they like, but we have never had anything like this before, they have got his name from somewhere in the last 2 weeks.

The administrators are working out of the company HQ, who should he speak to? Administrators or company people?

OP posts:
soapbox · 26/10/2005 21:25

Jan - who are the administrators?

I think it is E&Y IIRC. I would be extremely surprised if they have sold this list!

However I'm not sure whether your DH would be on a list of secured creditors (for wages owed) that may have to be publically filed?? Not my area unfortunately - try Motley Fool!

JanH · 26/10/2005 21:26

It's not E & Y. It begins with a B, 2 other letters but I forget which - bear with me.

soapbox · 26/10/2005 21:28

soapbox · 26/10/2005 21:29

BDO Stoy Hayward

JanH · 26/10/2005 21:30

Thanks, hunker. Reading that thread, maybe they post stuff out at random!

misdee, I will do that too - collect up everything I can find in the junk dept and post it back in a huge packet with their envelope stuck on the front - great idea, thanks!
