Have had to call out heating engineer. It needs a fancy part, but the labor is really what is Shock Shock

The boiler is about 10 years old and has been fine up until now.

What do people think about the service plans out there? Worth it? Not worth it?

We have a service plan for our heating, drains and plumbing. Over the years I doubt it's saved us much money - though it's spread the cost, obviously - but it's been worth the peace of mind. For example when we moved to a new house and had all the gas appliances checked and serviced at no extra cost, or, best of all, when the ball-cock failed on our mains-fed cIstern at 5.30pm on Christmas Eve!

We've had a British Gas plan forever - it's around £220 a year, including annual boiler service, to cover the whole central heating system & it's been a godsend at times. We're in the NW & have always had very good service from BG, I'm not sure it's the same everywhere.

Like prettycandles we've probably spent more on the cover than we've had in parts & service but they turn up very quickly when you do have a problem & you don't have to sweat about the cost.

Our boiler is 28 years old & they are still willing to cover it - they seem to keep a huge range of parts in stock available at very short notice. (at some point though it will need a part which is no longer made & then we're stuffed)

There is a big company called Homeserve which I have heard negative comments about.

Last year Which? Magazine reviewed central heating service plans. Probably worth looking at before choosing one.

Thanks.. Just called to BG and we'll probably go with their something or other service at £17 a month. Meanwhile the heating engineer is upstairs trying to get the hot water working now that he has fixed the boiler. I just want to scream at him that he's about to go into the next billable hour Grin

Typically what will happen is that as soon as you pay for cover the boiler won't go wrong again.

However if you decide not to have cover it will!!
