A new job when already pregnant - rights/duties to inform?

Anyone know. Have tried the archives but can't find anything.

I am only 7 weeks pregnant and not actually been offered new job but would have to accept it if I was as we are in financial dire straits and it is with a top top employer.

Am I obliged to tell them..... before offer, after offer.

Or is it the usual 15 weeks prior to due date like when you are already in employment.

You are not obliged. You might not even know yourself remember and usually people dont tell before the 12 week deadline.

HRHWickedwaterwitch · 19/10/2005 21:36

I wouldn't tell them, being pregnant shouldn't preclude the right to work imo! I wouldn't mention it at all until 12 weeks or later.

Hi try maternity alliance.com, they have all the info, but FYI I had someone start working for me a few years ago, who was preggers when she started with us, but didn't tell us, and it didn't make one jot of difference, as the DSS paid her maternity not the company, so it didn't matter, if you see what I mean, you have to be employeed for the full 6mths (from what I remember)before you go on maternity for the co to pay, so as you probably won't be? they won't care.....but double check the mat alliance site for full details!

I am 99% sure it's the 15 week thingy like you thought, Good luck, hope you get the job

I was in a similar situation whilst in early preg with DS and had planned to tell new bosses that it wasnt planned and was a complete surprise - but then, I do lie a lot !

You don't have to tell them any earlier than the 15 weeks prior to EWC. Good luck...hope you get the job! You'll only be entitled to Ordinary Mat Leave though (as you probably already know).

buffytheharpsichordcarrier · 19/10/2005 22:07

no you're absolutely NOT obliged to tell them until the usual time. I don;t think here is any moral obligation either FWIW, it is still very early. I think telling them once you have been offered the job is a good compromise though - protects you.

Find out tomorrow if I've got it or not. Want it and don't want it in equal measure. Will be devastated to put dd (20 months) into daycare. Am loving hanging out with her at the moment. We have tea parties all day.

Decided will not tell new co (if I get the job) for a couple of months, give myself a chance to get my feet under the door.
