Last year my DH was earning 18k until April, then 24k, plus another 2 or 3k through additional work. I was on IB until the April and then I did a few temp jobs, the sum earnings of which probably came to about 2k - if that.

I filled in a form to claim working tax credits, but got DH to fill in his salary bits. It got turned down and I just assumed we earned too much, but now I'm wondering if DH filled something in wrong - I'm sure I've seen people earning more getting Tax credits. Mind you, he earns 30k now (although no other income), so probably not entitled to anything any more - right?

Also - I got charged emergency tax for the temp job last year - will I get that back automatically, or do I have to claim it back?

Would really appreciate some help here - so confused by tax and I hate not being competent at something.

There is a online website called turn2us and you can work out what you can get on there. Notsure about the tax probably best to contact the tax office and ask them to help you claim it back.

Tax credits are based on the previous year's earnings i.e. what you earned between 6th April 09 and 5th April 10. So if he was 'earning £18k until April' that is the number you should have submitted together with your own income. And, at that level, WTC would probably be awarded.... fill in your details for April 09 - April 10 into this form to get an idea.

Your next claim would be based on what you both earned between April 10 and April 11.

To get back your overpaid tax see here for how to claim

Tax Credits - I think that the HMRC website has a 'Do I Qualify' calculator, so I'd suggest you go on there, stick in your income and find out. Then you can get in touch with HMRC if you find you do qualify, and amend any incorrect info you've given them

Re a tax refund - write to the office that dealt with your last employers tax affairs, include details of all your employments - include employers name, dates of employement and provide your P45's if you have them - also tell them about any periods of IB (and how much you received excluding the first 28 weeks which is non taxable) Then if you are due a refund you'll get one.

'Simples' (as DSD would say) Wink
