Shoddy Goods

What do you do if you buy something from a big online retailer and it breaks. They say if it breaks after 30 days of purchase you have to go to the manufacturer to ask for repair/replacement.

But manufacturer says you have to go to point of sale for help.

Am going round in circles with them. Any advice?

Depends what ti is and how/why it has broken. Your contract is with the retailer not the manufacturer but it may be covered by a warranty.

Did you pay for it with a credit card? Sometimes that can be a way to get cover for shoddy goods.

Thank you for replies. Paid for with visa debit card. It's a battery operated train that has broken within a few uses. so not terribly valuable (£25) but quite annoying. There are quite a few reviews on the internet that say this has happened to other people and it's suggested it happens when the dc takes it off the track or tries to push it with the battery running. It's recommended for my dc's age group but I guess she could have pushed it whilst the battery is running.

Debit card owntl offer same protection as a cc and it is under £100 anyway. Can you return with it and receipt to shop and say it is not fit for purpose.

Do they - that's good to know.

I bought it on Amazon which says if you want to return something after 30 days because it's broken you have to contact the manufacturer.

But the manufacturer's website says to contact the retailer.

If it is faulty within a reasonable period of time, Amazon have to deal with your complaint, not manufacturer. Info here but your statutory rights override their 30-day policy.

Sales of goods act here means that it should be fit for purpose.

It sounds like it was not fit for purpose - I would keep on at Amazon as they have the 'contract' with you.
