Newly single mother, Student, don't know whereto start to find out what I am entitled to

OK.

I am (or will be in v near future) a single mother to 3 children. I am also a full time student.

The benefits checker systems which I have looked at don't cater for students. I don't have a clue what I am entitled to or where to claim.

I am currently leaving in a mortgaged property but I am guessing that I won't be able to take it on in my own name as a student (even though I could afford it)...so I guess I am looking at rented accomodation, but TBH need to give that some thought, and discussion with AP (Arsehole Partner, thoughht I would go for a new acronym).

I am paid a bursary on my course but it is tax free. I do have a coniderable savings stash which will presumable be put into the equation.

What I really need is a list of possible income sources which I can check through to see if I am eligable.

Thanks,

Have you looked at the Turn2Us website for a guide? If you have and the results weren't helpful, then your next step could be to consult CAB for more advice on your specific situation. If 'AP' isn't helping financially then the CSA might also be a good step.

I've found it a real struggle finding out what you are entitled to as a student parent. Nobody seems to know. You might be able to get the mortgage in your name if you get a guarantor eg your parents. Not all banks do that though. Suggest you go to welfare/support services at your uni & they can help you navigate.

Thanks,

My parents couldn't act as gurantor as they have bad debt.

I advise going to your university and/or student union. I was a single mum at uni and have never received so much help and support from anyone as I did from my university and union. They will know everything you need to :)

Will post in detail later.

What ages are children

OADCB · 15/02/2011 07:15

And how much are your savings.

When you say bursary are you a nurse or social work student?

SlightlyMadSpook · 16/02/2011 10:40

Children 9, 9 & 4

Don't want to post details of savings but to say it is a 5 figure sum, unless I buy ExP out of house immediately where it will become a 4 figuer sum (probably).

Suggest you speak to cab.

Cant advise without full details and as you have savings and child is near to I.S Age limit.

SlightlyMadSpook · 16/02/2011 12:41

OK, Thanks anyway
