So the police broke down mil door today

mil has some medical issues and got taken into hospital last night, she let her sister who lives miles away know and then she called us this morning to let us know

I have had a call from the police this afternoon as the neighbours had contacted them as all her lights were on (so people thought someone was in she says) and she must have left her bedroom window on the latch and it's caught in the wind and smashed. Obv seeing as how all the curtains were closed, the lights were on and the window broken the neighbours were concerned that she had fallen down or something and contacted the police, who have broken down her front door

Now the police lady I spoke to says that they had contacted the hospitals and they had told them that they'd had noone through with mil's name and so had to check all was ok (which I understand of course).....but she was in two hospitals last night and is in a ward in one now..so she is in hospital

Anyway sorry this is so long but I guess she can claim for her window on her house insurance...but who pays for her door? Confused the police are boarding her door up for the mo, and wouldn't have knocked the door down if they'd known she was in the hospital

TIA

This happened to a tenant of mine a few years ago. She paid for the door herself because she felt that she was to blame (she was on drugs) and I got a bill a few weeks later from the police for £60 for the boarding up of the door. I would have thought it could be claimed on insurance though.

thanks...the police lady never mentioned that they may charge for the door getting boarded Shock

It's not really anyone's fault as such, she's suffering from anxiety and panic attacks and has been in and out of hospital quite a bit (obv checking the windows would have been an idea but I bet she'll have been in a state)

But as she is in the hospital the police shouldn;t have knocked the door down, but they were misinformed..oh dear

I guess I'll have to ask she's calling me back when the door's been boarded, what do you think I should say? Would I need to get a crime number? Grin

There probably wouldn't be a crime ref for gaining access for concern for welfare, there will definately be a log number though. Your MIL will get a bill for the door being boarded though, we had our window put through a few years ago and as we weren't in the police got someone to board it and we were sent the bill. Your MIL should def be able to claim this on her buildings insurance though.
