Online Tax Return Question

Doing Tax return online which should be fairly pain free this time.
However can't find my main job p60. (In safe place that I cant remember) I have my March Payslip. It has gross pay, NI pay, pensionable pay and taxsable pay on it.

Do I enter gross pay or taxable pay on income?

"Pay received" is your gross pay - the total before any deductions. "Tax already deducted from your pay" is the total amount of income tax you've paid.

It's taxable pay that goes on your tax return, otherwise you will end up paying tax on the difference between that and gross pay, which is probably pension payments.

Elsewhere in the tax form you're asked to supply the amount you've paid in pension payments.

Yes, but it's pension not deducted directly from salary. (Or that is how it seems to me)
I found the P60 by the way, readjusted the tax return and now they owe me 95p.

I was a bit surprised initially to have a bill of £500 quid as I have have very little extra income on top of my PAYE over the past couple of years due to studying while working full time but I don't really understand tax totally so I keep a cushion for tax anyway. I have had my PAYE tax code adjusted umpteen times over the last few years, due to a huge underpayment a few years ago, and a very large tax bill. Hence having to Self Assess.

Good, it's always best to go from the P60 because your employer will have sent HMRC the same numbers on a return called a P14 so it is likely to cause a problem if the numbers are different. I assume the number on the P60 was the same as the Total Taxable Pay To Date on your last payslip?

Please don't be confused by Chil1234's comment - there are a number of different pension payment arrangements which the tax return has to allow for. The boxes Chil1234 is referring to say quite clearly "Do not include payments you make to your employer's pension scheme which are deducted from your pay before tax or payments made by your employer."

Yes P60 number = taxable pay.

I find the whole tax thing a bit confusing as I have 2 jobs, one full time and one part time as and when, but obviously only pay BR tax for that one at source. I also (a couple of yrs ago) had a small business on the side too (had a very busy life!) but because of studying had to cut down on extra work.
Funny how you manage without the extra money though...
