help - need an unconventional loan

needadviceplease · 10/10/2005 09:28

I am looking for a way to get a loan of £350 urgently. Myself and dp have bad credit, and I have no income at the moment as I am on unpaid maternity leave.
we live in a house owned by dh's dad and pay him rent which amounts to the mortgage repayments, but as dh works through agencies and was out of work for three weeks last month we cannot afford to pay him. he has said if we cannot pay by tomorrow evening we will have to leave, even though I am 36 weeks pregnant - they never had a great relationaship and his dad is refusing to help at all. None of our family and friends are in a position to help either.
i am worried sick, we cannot get an overdraft or loan from anywhere,
Does anyone know of any private lenders in the london area, I am willing to pay up to 50% interest just to save being evicted at such a difficult time.

Im sure he CANT (legally) evict you just like that....

think how hard it is to get squatters out of a house!

needadviceplease · 10/10/2005 09:31

I know..but we cannot deal with the stress of him trying to, and being unsettled just before the baby is born. in light of this situation we will be moving house as soon as possible after the baby is born, but I really need to raise the money to pay him, just to ease my mind.

NAP - Although I would never normally recommend this, but try Provident. They lend small amounts to anyone and will let you pay it back weekly (an agent calls by your house). The interest is horrendous I'm afraid.

Your FIL sounds like a total prick!

needadviceplease · 10/10/2005 09:37

thanks, i know provident are awful. unfortunately we already went to them and they would only loan us £200, which is why we need to raise another £350. (mortgage is £550). killer interest, but we are desperate!
are there any other companies like provident who will do fast cash loans through home collection?

OP posts:
Fangache · 10/10/2005 09:41

NAP - That's awful. I'm afraid I don't know of anymore. Can write him a cheque to get him off your back.... then just cancel it? That'll buy you more time.

expatinscotland · 10/10/2005 09:45

Need
Have you applied for housing benefit? If you are renting, you may qualify! Some councils pay benefit directly to the tenant rather than the landlord if it's private landlord housing.

That might buy you some time, and it doesn't have to be paid back.

needadviceplease · 10/10/2005 09:46

No, he said it's cash or nothing. You are right- he is an absolute prick, we suspected before but this situation means dh will just cut all ties with him as soon as we can move to a new place. it's sad he will miss out on seeing his first grandchild because of such a petty issue. The sad thing is he can easily afford to cover it, or wait until the end of the moneth. he lives in a £300'000 house, and owns two other houses. this is why i am trying to sort it out, dp can't do it as he is at work, and it also breaks his heart that his dad could do this to us.
thanks for trying to help anyway.
hopefully someone will come along with another idea

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 10/10/2005 09:47

he's threatening you w/homelessness. have you seen a housing officer? you could be eligible for priority housing from the council OR a housing association.

needadviceplease · 10/10/2005 09:48

expat - i have applied but they haven't proccesed it yet. they said it is doubtful as dp usually works full time, so is classed as being able to provide for both of us.
after the baby is born we will get ctc etc and a surestart grant, but not before. if only he was kind enough to wait instead of reacting like this. we ae willing to pay, we just simply don't have it!

OP posts:
needadviceplease · 10/10/2005 10:04

my friend has just told me about a payday loan where you give them post dated cheques and get the cash, does anyone know anymore about these or where to aply for one - this could be the ideal solution!

OP posts:
Fangache · 10/10/2005 10:15

There is a place in my town that does this. Its called FastCash. Don't know much about it though.

Kidstrack2 · 10/10/2005 10:52

Tried GreenWood Finance, a bit cheaper than Provident but same idea. Try google

hub2dee · 10/10/2005 11:01

"FIL, you turf us out and the tax man gets to hear about this, ahem, income from your property"

?

Is it feasible to look at any kind of income creation ideas ? A car boot sale perhaps to clear out some stuff ? What about making stuff to sell (jewelry / craft things / sandwiches / cakes etc. to local wokers in the AM etc.) ? If dp is not working (but can) could he try some cash in hand work ? Car washing, gardening etc. ?

needadviceplease · 10/10/2005 11:04

dh is working in an office now..it was just a bad time when his agency couldnt offer him anything last month. he really needs a permanent job, with the baby coming soon.
i will speak to dh on his unch break to see if this payday loan is feasible.
i just cannot believe the situation we are in. fair enough if it was some faceless private landlord, but to do this to your son!?

OP posts:
needadviceplease · 10/10/2005 11:06

i am also going to go to the job centre and see if we could get a crisis loan. it says on the website they are not available to pay rent to a private landlord, but maybe given our situation they will bend the rules slightly.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 10/10/2005 11:09

I agree, need. Your FIL doesn't sound like a very nice man.

Hope you get out of there soon!

needadviceplease · 10/10/2005 11:10

ooh and kidstrack..greenwood are a subsidiary of provident..seems they hold a monopoly over home collected credit!

OP posts:
needadviceplease · 10/10/2005 14:54

things aren't happening..dp cannot get the paydayloan as he is an agency worker so they cannot guarantee he will have the money to repay..
and the social said no way...grrr

OP posts:
Fangache · 10/10/2005 14:58

Why don't you go to the housing office and declare yourself homeless?

expatinscotland · 10/10/2005 14:59

Exactly! Need, see a housing officer TODAY. Or at least make an appointment. He's threatening to turf you out. You'd be a priority for housing.

needadviceplease · 10/10/2005 15:02

we are in london and the social worker attached to my antenatal clinic said we would have a massive wait if we did.
also as dh is working we wouldnt be a priority.
i also cannot deal with the stress of having to move into a new and probably nasty house when the baby is due in the next month.
this is why we are prepared to pay whatever interest rate, just so we can have the baby, and then have time to seek a new house.

OP posts:
Fangache · 10/10/2005 15:03

NAP - But if you can afford to pay a massive interest rate.... how come you can't afford £350 to pay the rent?

oh and... a massive wait WHERE exactly??? If you're homeless you have no place to wait.

dramaqueen72 · 10/10/2005 15:03

what about a pawnbrokers type place? they can usually raise cash on anything you have for short while. or some do money lending/cheque cashing.
cash recycle, cash converters, those kind of places. some are much nicer than others
I'm really sorry about your situation.
have you approached the housing people and said
this is our situation, we are homeless as off 'x' date where can we go what can we do?'

needadviceplease · 10/10/2005 15:08

fang..we cannot really afford that, but fact is dp got a £200 pay cheque for the whole of last month which we can barely eat on, and will get the usual £900 at the end of this month.we just need to raise the cash now.
our electricity/gas/phone companies have been very sympathetic and suspended payment for a month or two..
how can a faceless company be more willing to help us than dh's own dad? that's what is so sad..

OP posts:
vicimelly · 10/10/2005 15:11

Is it a crisis loan you applied for?? You wont get crisis loans for anything other than very immediate needs i.e food and fuel.
Could you apply for a social fund budgeting loan though? Am not sure on the qualifying criteria, but I am sure you can use these for rent for private landlords, I got one to pay a deposit for a private rental.
Sorry if not much use, but good luck!
