I am very upset. Do you think they are right to do this?????

Why were you in unauthorised OD? Need to know more before replying really. Though that is a bit steep.

iamnotaprincess · 10/12/2010 13:39

i bought something online without realising i did not have enough funds...

Mmmm. Banks do rack up the unauthorised charges hugely since they stopped charging for normal current account use.

TBH although I think it is steep, you really do need to... well, you know you need to know what's in your account.

iamnotaprincess · 10/12/2010 14:08

i know, i am an idiot!

Happens to us all [shrug] but I honestly think that, annoying though it is, you just have to suck this one up, and vow through gritted teeth never to let it happen again.

I have started keeping notes on my phone - the main note includes my current balance, amount of credit left (different because I'm permanently overdrawn!), spending that I know is coming up and the total that it comes to. I update it daily. Then I can't fool myself that I have more than I thought, or that I don't really have to spend £168 on rail fares this month.

I also keep future notes, each one showing when my next pay is due, the spending I need to cover that month and what it comes to. Allows me to spread the big spending like christmas, birthdays, haircuts (not that I have any) etc. Just an idea. I used to use a spreadsheet but now that I'm not at a desk every day it doesn't work.

If you ring and ask, they may let you off some of the charges as a goodwill gesture. The charge is normally made up of different components including interest. I really sympathise, I went a couple of pounds overdrawn last year (completely my fault) and they honoured a direct debit and ended up charging me over £80 in fees! I was gutted. Managed to get the interest knocked off and now make myself look at my online account every day! I am still rubbish with money but my advice would always be to ring and talk to them.

Thank you. Your notes have made me realise I need to be bloody grown up with my money.

I get my balance texted to me once a week - could have it daily I think but once a week is ok for me.

I've also set my bank to text me if I go over or under a certain amount in my account so I can see if I'm close to my limit or my pay's gone in.

It was a free service with my online banking so have a look and see if Nationwide do the same? It really helps me keep track.

iamnotaprincess · 13/12/2010 18:04

they waived the fees, hurrah!

You're amazing! I've got to start being less passive!

happybubblebrain · 14/12/2010 21:25

I went overdrawn once (20 years ago). They charged me something like £15. I told them to give me my money back or I would change banks. They immediately refunded me and I've stayed with them ever since. Worth a try.

happybubblebrain · 14/12/2010 21:27

Oooops, just seen above. Congratulations.

alexandra65 · 17/01/2011 15:53

IMO Nationwide and complete and utter b@st@rds. I would change back accounts if I were you. Have had no end of problems with them and have changed accounts.

ivykaty44 · 17/01/2011 15:54

I had an unaurthorized over draft and they charged me £30. I hadn't known I was overdrawn as money which should have been in the bank hadn't appeared. I telephoned and spoke to someone and explained what had happened and that i hadn't meant to - she dropped the charges and uped my over draft limit to stop it happening again

MyrrhyBS · 17/01/2011 16:05

£60 sounds excessive!

Its worth considering having an overdraft set up, even if you don't use it, just in case, if your bank/building soc don't charge for it...
