Tax and second job

Does anyone know how the income tax system works for a second job?

If you had two jobs, with a combined income which was lower than the tax threshold, would you have to pay tax? Or does the personal allowance only apply to one source of income?

Hi, when you start your second job you will be asked to complete a P46, this will instruct your second employer to deduct tax with no allowance (code BR) ie 25 % of your pay. You will need to phone your tax office, (your employer should be able to give you the tel no., but if they can't the tax office ref will be on your payslip & you can find tel no. via the website)& ask to have your personal allawance split between the two jobs. It make take a little while to go through, but you will get the wrongly deducted tax back in a later pay packet. HTH

Thanks batgirl.

So eventually the personal allowance could be split between the two?
