If you are not married to your partner can you hold a house in each of your names so that you do not pay capital gains tax on the sale of both ?

You should probably read this link the parts about gifts and transferral of assets are relevant to an unmarried couple

CGT is not payable if the property sold is your main residence. If there are 2 properties and you both live in property #1 then I think it would be difficult for whoever owns property #2 to argue that that was their main residence.
