So how much do I need to buy a house these days?

DH and I are renting...we are going abroad for one year to 18 months with work...and as we have the opportunity to live rent free there we are hoping to save enough for a deposit on a house when we come back to the UK.

What will we need? What is the market meant to be like then? Feel so overwhelmed as I know nothing about this kind of stuff and DH is a bit "Ahch it'll be fine!" about it all...

Confused

Depends where you want to buy it and what sort of house you want, up here (north ish) you can get a 2 bed terrace for 60 grand at the moment!

Cheshire! Shock But not all of Cheshire is posh...thinking kind of average 3 bedder or battered semi rural dump here.

This Average House Prices UK table breaks it down by region and type of property. £155,000 will get you a three-bed semi in the North West on average - more like £170-180,000 in Cheshire specifically. The bigger the deposit you can put down, the better the deals are for mortgages. A 20-25% deposit would get you a good rate. Budget for conveyancing fees, removal costs & furnishings on top.
