"Generous" tax credit payments - help please

Our tax credit award have just been calculated and I have been told we will be receiving more than £700 a month.

But it seems very generous. DP and I live together, we both work (I work four days a week) and childcare costs are £120 a week on average for our one DD. Our combined income is around £47,000. But I was on maternity leave and DP was out of work in the 2009/2010 period when the payments seem to be for.

They assure me the award is correct but it seems rather generous and I'm worried that we will suddenly have to pay back money.

Any advice would be very gratefully received.

hi Reddaisy- know your post was a few weeks ago but I have just posted as in a similar position to you. Last year my dh was out of work and did a little self-employment, money was so tight, but this year the tax credits have really gone up based on last year's income- not when we needed it last year, but now, when he has a new job paying 25 K more. So, it looks like we exactly fit the 'up to 25K more' bracket thing. It's all a bit worrying isn't it? My main worry is that they might reclaim the childcare. We're till qualifying for a large proportion of childcare but think this will stop in the next tax year.

Have you tried ringing them for advice? I can't get through...

cant help much but my good friend has similar problem and rang them 4 times and wrote to them to check their generous payments, they reassured her time and time agin they were absolutely correct and then 3 years later wrote to her to say they had overpaid her and she has had to pay it all back, just over three thousand pounds,

I would contact them and advise of your current income, they will probably re-assess you. They did with us. Our joint income is around same as yours and childcare costs. We only get the min award approx £10 per week. If I were you I would put the extra money they give you away in case you need to pay back
