Do women earn as much as men?

Intrigued by the responses to WWW's thread tonight which was mostly about the earnings of men.

So what about women????

Generally no - because they have children and career goes on backburner / treads water.

hatstand · 09/09/2005 00:27

it was about earnings of the partners of sahp. so it was statistically bound to be about men, esp her. but, to answer your question no.

hatstand · 09/09/2005 00:28

her was meant to be here

MillionaireMummy · 09/09/2005 00:29

I earn 37m p.a. and my husband only 3m.

soapbox · 09/09/2005 00:31

Hatstand - I meant I was generally intrigued - of course that thread was primarily about men given the SAHM angle.

I am just interested in those families where both mum and dad work, what proportion of the salaries are earned by each party.

He is a well-known Mexican Wrestler though and I married him for his fame not his money.

handlemecarefully · 09/09/2005 00:32

MM - you're a one!

soapbox · 09/09/2005 00:32

And more importantly is the differential 'fair' given the difference in hours/responsibilities/type of job?

MM

ratio for me and dh is 1:4

I don't think he works 4 times harder than me or is 4 times more talented....

But it doesn't bother me really. C'est la vie, and what is his is mine

jabberwocky · 09/09/2005 04:16

I think some of it depends on the profession. I know that I earn as much as any man in my field. But, unfortunately there are still many women out there who do not.

philippat · 09/09/2005 06:27

no, because percentage of women in 'high earning' jobs (say city etc) is low.

jobs which have a high proportion of women (even ones which demand a high level of education) never have average high wage.

I would assume that the nature and culture of these different professions has contributed to the feminisation of a profession, but don't know if it's been proven (eg if the Architecture profession made a huge effort to have a more flexible culture, would the % of women rise above 4%? And if so, would salaries continue to rise or be eroded?)

Before we planned a family we were almost 1:1 but since then he's had promotions and taken a contractor position and I've stayed still in steady job, no risks, high flexibility, so now 1:5 me to him.

Does frighten me in case things ever went wrong between us, but for now it just wouldn't work if we were both doing the jobs that paid highest, someone needs to be able to leave at 4.30pm to get to nursery on time!

CountessDracula · 09/09/2005 13:13

We are about 1:1 (actually I am very slightly ahead at the moment I think) and both work in the City

fsmail · 09/09/2005 18:15

I used to earn more even on 4 days a week but have now gone down to three and therefore earn less.

compo · 09/09/2005 18:19

they do in the public sector - everyone is on he same scale

HandbagAddiction · 09/09/2005 18:24

We're about 2:1 in my favour at the moment. Always have earned more than DH....just down to the nature of work I do I think more than anything else.

PeachyClair · 09/09/2005 18:55

I used to earn about the same as Dh, but mine was with worse working conditions (short term contracts etc)

motherinferior · 09/09/2005 19:14

Statistically, no, but I have to go and put the kids to bed so can't find the figures. Try the EOC website.

philippat · 09/09/2005 19:30

compo, I wish I could agree that the public sector pays men and women the same, but I can't. I know a lot of work has gone into trying to compare different jobs with each other and I'm very supportive of that (even though it's very hard work to go through), BUT...

Jobs that needs similar levels of education, skills, experience, responsibility, intelligence are still NOT on the same grades. Accountants (larger propotion of men) are still on higher grades than Librarians (larger proportion of women). Yes, it's like comparing an orange with a spade, but because it's so difficult to compare, the 'female' professions are still losing out.

princesspeahead · 09/09/2005 19:50

generally no.
women doing the SAME jobs as men (and often better) don't get paid as much as men.
sad but true.

soapbox · 09/09/2005 19:53

It is a pisser though isn't it!

nikkie · 09/09/2005 23:09

I earn more in 3 days than my ex does in 5 but I am a TA and he is a care assistant so not in the same league as we are talking here.
