I've just noticed that my tax code is BR. What does that mean?

Basic rate tax

Unless you hve lots of jobs or earn tonnes of money it's probably wrong

Is it a new job? Did you have a P45 from your last job

ObamaSelf · 28/09/2010 20:43

It means that tax is deducted at 20% (basic rate) with no personal allowance. Usually used for a second job or income

c0rns1lk · 28/09/2010 20:45

started in April 2009. YIKES! Is my only job. How do I get the tax back?

OK ring your tax office and ask them

They may ask you to fill in a form - or they may send a new tax code to your boss

Has it really not changed since April 09?

Do you have any other income - interest on savings, income from a rental property?

c0rns1lk · 28/09/2010 20:48

will have to check back through pay slips. Hope I can find them Hmm

Don't worry your boss will have records plus you paid the money in to a bank so there is a record there

This happened to me a couple of years ago- had BR tax code for 5/6 months when started new job. I phoned the tax office and received a few hundred back as a cheque (I had left by this stage)

In a more recent job I was put on tax code BR again but received the money back through my wages as I was still working for them Smile

thanks

KatyMac - even if you earned £1m a year you would not have code BR unless you had another job or other income which you set your personal tax free allowance against.
