Probably a petty thing, but how much did it cost you to change your watch battery?

Today I asked at a well known high st cobbler/jewellery and watch repair shop etc that also has concessions in a supermarket chain.

The man serving me said, "that will be £11.95, please". He saw the look on my face and added, "that includes a lifetime guarantee". I asked him what that meant and he explained that they would replace the battery for free if I brought the guarantee crard.

I was [shocked] and told him I had paid £2.50 at the local street market. He replied that "they only used cheap Chinese batteries"!

Needless to say, I walked away. AIBU to think £11.99 is a rip off, considering a watch battery is only a cell battery which costs pennies to buy. The only skill here is the instrument needed to open the watch case.

Now i' m talking about a bog standard cheap watch, not the Rolexes/omegas where I have had to pay £30 before, to change the battery. I understand the cases in these premium ranges need specialist equipment.

Cat64, It was a cobblers/keycutter place that quoted £11.95, that's why I was [shocked]. I don't know if I'm allowed to name them?...

£3 seems much more reasonable.

It was either £2.75 or £2.95 from a small local jewellers a couple of weeks ago.

They were even kind enough to test my old battery first as I wasn't sure if it was watch or battery problem which was causing my watch to stop/lose time intermittently.

Most I have ever paid is £4.50 but that included sealing the watch again.

nocake · 24/09/2010 15:02

I've been quoted £12 in that chain of stores so I went round the corner to a small independent shop and was charge about £4.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 24/09/2010 15:03

£25, but it has to go to a proper jewellers and be re-sealed as it is a Tag.

Pennies · 24/09/2010 15:04

Rolex tried to charge me £70 and a three week wait! I went to the bloke in the market and paid £5.

CherryChapstick · 24/09/2010 15:04

£2.40.

Pennies, Shock Shock

It seems from this small survey that I was right to think that £11.95 was daylight robbery - they should be ashamed of themselves!

6 euro 50 for my Tissot at the jewellers from which I bought it.

Lynli · 26/09/2010 14:51

Took Mils rotary to the jewellers yesterday, charged £4.

Get a kinetic watch and then you never have to have the battery changed.
