I have not been able to pay this debt with barclaycard and have ignored all contact.
Today I received a letter saying that their client will accept a payment of £872 to settle the account.
How can I check this is true?
It just seems too good

Well, I say go for it if you can.

Something is better than nothing. You could have been bankrupted and they'd have nowt from you.

although if you have other debts maybe going bankrupt is better than paying them £800.

Mmmm!!
What to say???? Hmm
Like someone has said everyone has different circumstances!!
My father has recovered now from his breakdown. My debt is interest, late payment charges, admin charges etc etc AND petrol to visit my dad in hosp as he was placed a long way away and new "belongings" for him in hospital!

I'm glad you got it sorted Parker, we are trying to sort our debts out now and its very hard (and embarressing ( even without strangers having a go at you!)

Yes it is really embarrassing. All the best to you.

Parker, make sure you deal with them in writing. You want a letter from them that states your payment is a 'full and final settlement' of the debt - that exact term should be used. Otherwise they make come back to collect the rest of the debt later.

Mumsnet isn't really the best forum for debt stuff - I'd have a look at the consumer action group forums (google them) and post in their debt section. They'll be plenty of people there who can talk you through it.
