Just had an email from 'HM Revenue and Customs.'

Just thought I would pass on the warning. It said I was entitled to a sizeable refund (nearly £1000) if I followed the link and gave my bank details so they could transfer the money into my account.

Needless to say I sent it into my SPAM folder, but it looked quite convincing.

If it was true, I imagine I would get a letter.

Its a fraud email, it was on the news as soon as the whole thing about refunds came out so did these emails.

snigger · 23/09/2010 15:10

HMRC NEVER contact anyone by email with reference to refunds.

Forward the scam email (without opening) to [email protected].

Thanks for the email address to forward it on, I would hate to think of people getting stung like this.

Is it a genuine E-mail from the genuine HMRC?

mummyofexitedprincesses · 23/09/2010 15:44

I am sure it wasn't, surely they wouldn't email asking for bank details. If it was genuine, they will confirm this when they get the message sent on to them.

Would be nice though, could do with a windfall...

See guidance from HMRC website here

The big give away is that the e-mails advise you that you will receive a response in a few days...HMRC never ever respond to anything in '3 - 5' days!

i gat this email. i was waiting for a refund of about £900. they told me on the phone that it will be dealt with by the 5th july. i got the email on the 5th july for he exact amount i finally recieved. i called them and they told me that it was a fraudulant mail and that they would contact me by post. when i expained that it was for the correct amount and on the day they said it would be dealt with by they didnt even sound at all bothered. this must be done from alot of information gained from the inside

scaryteacher · 24/09/2010 09:47

They are guessing as to the amount to be refunded. The latest one I've had says I'm due a refund of £1k plus. As I don't work, that's good going.

Another said about £400 which is about right for some marking I did, but as it came before I'd submitted my return with the figures for last year on it, it was evidently a fraud. When I click on the link in the email, my site protection warns me it's a fraudulent website as well, so there's another big clue!
