So, trying to get an idea if our gas and electricity is costing us way more than the norm, it seems ludicrously high to me!

We've been trying to be really careful, 4 bed house, all the usual electricals. Have been turning everything off at the socket, turning off lights etc. when not in use, but our latest bill has increased our combined gas and electricity payments to £205 a month Shock!

Would love to hear what others are paying to get an idea of the norm, plus any tips on cutting back. Thanks!

80 a month gas and electric. New build 3 bed semi. We are quite relaxed about energy use, not switching everything off all the time etc. I'm at home all day too. Yours does seem high.

New build mid-terrace 4-bed; two adults and at least one teenager here all the time; both adults work from home at least part of the time. Currently paying £86/month with Ovo.

Find out your payment plan and also how much you would use on average during each quarter. Get your calculator ready and give your energy provider a call and see what they can offer. Then look up the energy comparison sites and switch. There are price hikes coming so you may wish to go on a capped structure if you know you're going to be staying in your house over the next couple of years. It's often more cost effic to pay direct debit. Also beware of any phone calls from energy providers as the prices quoted won't neccessarily be VAT inclusive nor have sensible cap limits.

We have a 3 bed bungalow but I'm a SAHM so I'm in most of the time and if its cold the heatings on, we also have a tumble drier.

We were paying a ludicrous amount for our gas and electric but have just swopped to British Gas for both, I think its called websaver. Its definately worth looking on their website. Ours is now about £130 a month.

Old style council house. Summer is £5 electric and £3 gas a week, winter is £15 gas and £10 electric a week, so a lot less than yours.

hmmSleep · 12/09/2010 11:31

Thanks everyone. Does sound like we're paying over the odds, we're with Southern Electric. Will do the price comparison but can't help but think it's something we're doing wrong. We're already paying by direct debit, so no saving there.

Have checked bills, we're currently paying;

Standard energy - 4.92p each kwh
Discounted energy - 2.88p each kwh

We have a watson which gives us an idea of what is using the most electricity, seems we have very expensive lighting nd unfortunately a rather dark house.

It's our gas consumption that seems huge though, especially as we haven't had the heating on in months. Wondering if it's worth looking at our current boiler, in the long run might be worth the expense of replacing it.

£68 pounds per month.

2 bed terrace, but family of 4 and I work from home/children at home in afternoons. Ditched our tumble drier last winter.

At £205 a month I think it would be worth getting one of those electricity monitors to check where the money is going.

fedupdownhere · 12/09/2010 15:03

have end of terrace old council house 4 beds and at moment 80 per month for electic and 30 per month for gas so yours seems very high
we use tumble dryer and not to fussy about turning off lights ect and i am at home all day

nannynobnobs · 12/09/2010 15:12

Around £60 a month both together with Southern Electric. 2 bed mid terrace, I am home most of the day as a SAHM.

FranSanDisco · 12/09/2010 15:20

We have a 4 bed semi - 2 adults and 2 children. We pay £130 for gas and elec a month but I see I am in credit with gas so it may come down. I use a dishwasher, tumble drier and washing machine every day and as a student am at home studying alot.

mole1 · 12/09/2010 15:27

£72 per month combined gas/electric, 4 bed mid-terraced new build, with dh working from home about 2 days per week. I try to turn stuff off as much as poss, but dh doesn't! We have all the usual mod cons but no tumble dryer. Supplier is EON, using an internet account, no paper bills etc. You do need to switch about once a year to get a good deal.

bluefinger · 12/09/2010 15:35

Do you give them a meter reading before every bill? They might be estimating. We have a 3 bed semi and pay £97 a month combined, although we are in a bit of credit with the electric and will be in credit for the gas by the time the big winter bill hits.

Danthe4th · 12/09/2010 15:42

May be worth getting an engineer to check your gas meter, they can monitor for leaks, could be one that can't be smelt or the meter may not be working properly.

BicycleBelle · 12/09/2010 15:51

4 bed victorian semi with none of the usual modern insulation or well fitted windows, and 3 kids with too many electrical gadgets. I think we use more than most but pay £153 a month combined gas and elec. I think your provider is taking the p**s.
