Nanny called for jury service

I just found out our nanny has been called for jury service. It is going to cost £600 per week for temporary cover for up to 200 days. Does anyone know if there is help available for families in this position? It is extortion.

If her role counts as a carer then she can get out of it.

We may have to see if she can be excused. Otherwise I don't know how we can cover the cost.

i think that whilst you are obliged to give her time off you are not obliged to pay her and that she can claim for loss of earnings from somewhere. There is a maximum amount they will pay so if you take this route she may loose out financially so is unlikely to be happy about it.

It is very unlikely that a case will last 200 days.

She may be released after one week on Jury Service.

Has she returned the forms to them yet?

The case I was on Jury duty for lasted 3 days over 9 months!

If she is a carer she can be excused.

I applied to be excused as I looked after my child at home (aged 2) - I was taken off the available list for the next 10 years!

A nice letter should do it.

I was called up a couple of times and simply said I had my own small business and was unable to take time off as the business would fold. Their rates for pay were ludicrous, at around £40 a day I seem to remember.

I would love to do it but cannot financially.

I winder if there is some insurance product out there ?

Thanks everyone. Our nanny has written a letter to see if she can be excused, or even a deferrment would help so that I can take time off. We have our fingers crossed. She is happy to take the court allowance in lieu of pay, but because she lives with us, the cost of replacing her temporarily with a live-out nanny is incredibly expensive. I can understand the need for businesses to give staff the time off, but we are a family not a business. It just doesn't seem right that my family will end up £1,000 out of pocket.
