Will second wife have to contribute child support to first wife?

A friend is getting married next year (or might be) her partner was married before with one child and pays 20% of his salary (£22,000) to ex in child support. My friend earns a little bit more than him and has heard that she will also have to contribute because the new wife's income is taken into account when calculating child support payments.

This can't be true, can it? Anyone know?

I am not sure what the situation with the CSA is now, but DH has to pay via CSA for his son from previous marriage, we were assessed as a couple (this is about 13 years ago now) and they took my salary in to account at that time.

Thank you so much for posting. Although I am quite shocked that she may have to pay towards child support.

Anyone else any experience of this?

I think it is true, though have no specific knowledge.

His financial situation can be judged to have changed/improved, and therefore he is now (in theory) in a position to pay more.

She has been talking about putting the wedding on hold if this is the case. Her and DP both want his DC to come and live with them they definitely don't want to give any more money to the ex because of concerns about how she is spending it.

depends what scheme he is on. Old scheme they could choose to take it into account, new scheme they don't

miond you, they make their own rules up tbh

Yes new partners income is taken in to account if they live together not just married, However payments will go down if they start a family of their own.

wingandprayer · 25/08/2010 16:53

Well technically she wouldn't be paying ex wife, but he would be paying ex wife more as he would have more disposable income given new wife would be paying part of their household expenses too IYSWIM

but as stated above, should they have kids of own, it all changes again

ifeelthesame · 25/08/2010 19:47

Under the new scheme is is just a % of the parents salary but under the old scheme my understanding is that they ask for the partners details, not so they contribute directly but so they can assess how much they contribute towards the household.

If your friend earns over a certain amount (or refuses to divulge what she earns) it will be assumed she contributes 50% of the house running costs, so only 50% of the outgoings will be taken into account when calculating her partners payments.
